ajc: Braves seek to bring back Sutton to booth

Get ready to reform the disulfide bonds of your hair...again!

The Braves have hired Jim Powell for their radio-broadcast team and are working to bring back Don Sutton to be his new partner, according to several people familiar with the negotiations.

Sutton is still under contract with the Washington Nationals, where he’s spent the past two seasons. The Braves were trying to reach a settlement to permit him to return to Atlanta, where the Hall-of-Fame pitcher worked 18 seasons as a Braves television broadcaster through 2006.

The Braves had planned a news conference for Thursday to introduce the new radio-broadcast team, however that was postponed after difficulties arose getting Sutton out of his current contract.

I've been wondering who their radio team would be. I'd been hoping they'd use Sciambi full time there. Who is replacing Powell with the Brewers?

I was hoping for Sciambi too. I like him a lot. Sutton's fine, though. I don't know anything about Jim Powell.

Snicker. I'm a Sutton fan, but he does rely a little too much on a handful of stock insights.

Why not bring back Skip Carey? Sure he is dead, but could he use a worse job then ESPN's new 3 man booth.

I'm not surprised that Sutton wants to go back to Atlanta, but I'll be sorry to see him no longer be a part of the Nats' broadcasts.

I always used to crack up at his Carpets of Dalton commercial back in the early 90s where he walked around the grounds with a clipboard like he was moonlighting there as a manager.

I doubt it'll ever happen, and certainly not at Atlanta, since he seems very happy in Nevada -- but I'd really like to see Greg Maddux do some broadcasting work some day. He seems like the kind of player who'd have a lot of insight into the game.

I'm not surprised that Sutton wants to go back to Atlanta, but I'll be sorry to see him no longer be a part of the Nats' broadcasts.

After we get stuck with 162 games of Bob Carpenter and Ray Knight, so will I.

(Although I doubt it will take anywhere near 162 games to feel that way. It would be a lucky thing if it took as long as 162 seconds.)

Prior to BC becoming The Voice of the Nats, I only knew him him as a competent B-list ESPN MLB broadcaster -- nothing exceptional, but he did his job and didn't overdo it. But the guy I heard broadcast Nationals games was some godawful cross between a starry-eyed apologist, a shameless homer, and a past-his-prime professional. Was he always this bad?
