AL Central race: September 19, 2008

MLB.com: Alexei’s slam gives Sox 2 1/2-game lead

The intensity and fire which Ozzie Guillen pleaded for prior to his team’s 9-4 victory over the Royals on Friday certainly was apparent in the White Sox manager during one particular moment from a six-run fourth.

Alexei Ramirez capped off a nine-pitch at-bat with the bases loaded and two outs against Brian Bannister (9-15) by lofting a grand slam down the left-field line to break a scoreless tie.

MLB.com: Blackburn’s Twins crushed by Rays

The Twins were hoping that a ninth-inning comeback against one of the best teams in baseball on Thursday night might be the spark that the club needed. Instead, they followed it up on Friday with their worst defeat in over two weeks as they suffered an 11-1 loss to the Rays at Tropicana Field.

the Twins need to be within a game and a half going into their series with Chicago this week. If they can do that they can go into their series with the Royals only .5 back.

If necessary, the Sox play a make up game at home with the Tigers, right?

Yes, but God only knows when they'd be able to squeeze that in. MLB is really hoping and praying that it won't be necessary.

What do you mean God only knows? It's pretty clear they'd make that up on Monday, then if the Twins and Sox wind up tied afterwards, they play for the division on Tuesday.
