MLB.com: Vazquez loses as Twins close on Sox

Minnesota (85-72) took control via Jason Kubel’s two-run home run in the second and piled on from there, cruising to a 9-3 victory before a euphoric crowd of 35,225. Vazquez (12-15) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings while working with an ear infection.

I don't remember ever seeing a rivalry more dependent on home-field advantage than this one. The home team seems to routinely curb-stomp the visitors; the Twins pinball the Sox to death in the dome while the Sox play home run derby off Twins' pitching in the Cell. Bizarre.

Twins need to win tomorrow so I can go see the dispositive game on Thursday.

Yes, I'm selfish, given I saw the Twins clinch the central over the Tigers in 2006.

GO TWINS!

Made my first trip to the Metrodome last night. It was fun--the crowd was definitely into it. And my trip was made complete when Dye hit a foul off the roof in the 9th. Was kinda cool to just luck into a game with playoff implications, and the seats were good--near the top of the upper deck, but directly behind home plate; had a Questec view of the home plate ump's extremely large strike zone.

I have to say, the scoreboard system at the dome is a total abomination. There's no large scoreboard--there's a small diamondvision thing in left center, and the lineup, batter stats, batter performance in the game, pitch count, ball/strike count, pitch speed, game linescore, and out of town scores are ALL in separate locations on little tiny boards, and ALL in small font and/or with lousy contrast. I've never seen anything quite like it. At first I was frustrated at not being able to find the different spot I needed to find for EVERY SINGLE piece of information I was looking for, but when I found it, I realized I couldn't really read most of it anyway. It was sort of comical, in a way.

Fixed.

The Twins really need a sweep here. And even if they do, the Sox still control their own destiny.

Nah--it's weird and all, but I kind of liked the atmosphere. It ain't Wrigley, but that's part of what I liked about it--it was so different. (Miller, OTOH, I just think feels sterile.)

However, this is also true for the Twins. If the Twins sweep and both teams win out after that, a one game playoff will be needed.

I'm pretty sure the playoff game would be in Chicago. See comment #2 for which team is more in control of its own destiny.

No, no, all one-game playoffs will be held in Milwaukee.

I'll be so happy when the new park opens. Whatever it is, it's got to be better than the Humpdome.
   14. The Polish Sausage Racer  Posted: September 24, 2008 at 03:06 PM (#2953170)
Really? The Humpdome seems to me to be the biggest home field advantage in all of sports. Why would the Twins voluntarily give that up? Just to sell more luxury boxes? What a sad world.

That, and to sell more tickets. One of the biggest complaints about the Metrodome is that Twins fans are asked to take a nice, warm summer day or evening and spend it indoors, watching a game played on turf. It's fine for football, but it's a terrible place to play baseball.

There aren't a ton of nice months in MN, so spending any of them sitting in a below average football stadium facing right field sorts sux.

And it's a horrible place to watch baseball, weather aside. None of the seats face the infield, you have to turn your head and hope that the guy down the row from you isn't leaning forward and obstructing your view. You can't watch the game except on a television screen when you're buying concessions, which can take a long time during the better attended games.

As a Twins fan, I'll miss the home field advantages that come with the Dome, but I'm looking forward to seeing this team playing outside during the lovely summer months in Minneapolis.

What's the White Sox's extra game? I'm seeing both teams with 3-game series Fri-Sun.

On Monday if necessary vs. Detroit (not sure where)

And appropriately, given the hard time weather-wise the two teams had in playing that series, the early forecast calls for thunderstorms Monday.

And there also might be a Twins/Sox tiebreaker necessary on Tuesday...which would also be scheduled for Chicago. Between that and a possible three-way, two-game NL ###########, next week could be awfully fun.

Don't forget that the Mets could possibly have their next four games rained out, in a worst case scenario. Now we're talking a scheduling mess!

NTNgod, FWIW, the Friday night forecast in Philly is pretty dismal as well. This will be one wild weekend.
