AL Central race: September 3, 2008

MLB.com: White Sox escape Cleveland with win

But after Chicago snapped out of a two-game funk that had manager Ozzie Guillen calling his team “tired” and “dead,” Guillen kicked back in his chair, talked about how tired he was before putting a realistic spin on the White Sox 4-2 feel-good win over the Indians.

“I’m not going to call this road trip good because we won this one, because it wasn’t,” Guillen said of the team’s 4-5 mark on the trip.

The Sox may have gained a game but overall things are looking a lot less rosy. It appears that John Danks has hit a wall -- 11 runs allowed in his last three starts and, as others can probably attest to, 'looking' like a different pitcher than earlier in the season -- and, worse yet, Carlos Quentin is hurt and likely out at least until the beginning of next week. If Minnesota can keep this race to within a game for that closing-week series in the dome, you have to like their chances (as much as it pains me to say it)...

The Twins have lost several of their games on fielding mistakes, particularly mistakes made by the "hands" guys. Punto has booted two games in the past month, Pridie was in for defense last night, Everett threw one away in KC, etc. It's not all pitchers throwing into the bullpen. That bodes well for them insofar as they're staying in the road games long enough and well enough for an unearned run to cost them. In the past a lot of the road losses were absolute nightmares (CHW, BOS) and they haven't been giving those up recently.

On the other hand they've been throwing away a lot of games by not capitalizing on what is purported to be a core of the team: fielding. If Punto Pridie Everett et al are not fielding then they shouldn't be playing, as they don't hit much. They're not exactly Jeter when not catching the ball...

Should be a fun finish, but I'm afraid the survivor is going to get stomped in the playoffs.
