AL East race: September 22, 2008

MLB.com: Magic number dwindles in East with win

The Rays began the final week of the season headed in the right direction with a 4-2 win over the Orioles on Monday night at Camden Yards.

MLB.com: Clinch denied as Red Sox fall to Tribe

[Josh Beckett] wasn’t vintage on Monday night, and therefore the champagne will have to wait at least one more night. The Red Sox’s magic number for clinching a postseason berth remained at one in this 4-3 loss to the Indians.

Agree.

It's not over. But the Sox don't need to go out of their way to try to win it, if the other option is setting up the pitching rotation and resting those as needs resting for the postseason.

Red Sox Lose out, Yankees win out, it's some kind of tie, right? Just for the insanity of it, I hope that happens.

Something unusual from the Rays - Os game:

Orioles starter Brian Bass didn't allow a hit but was pulled after walking three straight batters in the fifth inning. His pitching line was rather unique: 4 2/3 innings, two runs, no hits and four walks.

Asked if he had any reservations about pulling a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, Trembley said, "He was done. He was out of gas."

I assume it's quite rare for a starter get that many outs without surrendering a hit and then get pulled from the game.
