Most of the season, they literally fell to pieces. For the past few weeks, it's been more of the figurative variety. I can't remember ever seeing so many boneheaded plays in the field other than in Little League. Twice an opponent has scored from second on an infield single!
That was a particularly well timed post in the aftermath of this Groundhog Day doubleheader.
They were only playing .500 ball before the injury bug. This is the type of Boston team I've been used to most of my life; better than .500 but out of contention.
There's no mystery about the whys of that, either. They haven't had more than two consistent starting pitchers all year, and they don't have the all around depth to make up for it. OTOH the Yankees have had only one consistent starter since the middle of July, and yet they've still held their ground.
