MLB.com: Long ball burdens Hughes as Yanks cooled

Phil Hughes gave up three home runs as the Yankees’ eight-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday in a 7-3 loss to the Blue Jays.

MLB.com: Four homers not enough for Rays against O’s

Tampa Bay tied a season high with four homers in Sunday’s game against the Orioles. But it wasn’t good enough for a victory, as Baltimore’s four-run sixth inning proved to be enough to let the Orioles hang on for an 8-7 win over the Rays in front of 28,268 at Camden Yards.

Meanwhile, over in third place, Papelbon blows another save with two outs in the ninth.

If the Yankees are going to lose a game, doing it on a day when the Rays waste a comeback -- against the Orioles -- and Papelbon stinks the joint up, sure takes the sting out of it.

Alfredo Simon got the win today because Jim Johnson (the pitcher of record when the Orioles took the lead) and Mike Gonzalez were awful. At one point it seemed possible that Uehara would lose a save because he got the win, but Simon pitched well and got it.

Interestingly, Gonzalez got a hold for the guy who relieved him's win.

Hughes seems fatigued. You can probably count on him to "keep you in the game" for 5 innings but the dominance of his first two months is not there anymore. 16 wins and a low 4s era is certainly a big step in the right direction, but let's hope he can take another step forward next year.
