AL East race: September 7, 2008

MLB.com: Rays edged by Jays in finale

The Rays came out on the losing end of a tight pitchers’ duel on Sunday, as they were blanked, 1-0, by the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. With the loss, Tampa Bay (85-56) was swept in the three-game series with Toronto and has gone just 1-5 in September.
...
Taking the hard-luck loss, Garza (11-9) allowed just the one run on six hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Toronto starter David Purcey managed to upstage Garza.

MLB.com: Byrd soars; Red Sox creep up on Rays

With a 7-2 victory Sunday, the Red Sox head home just 1 1/2 games back in the American League East. [Paul] Byrd tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings for the Red Sox, allowing just seven baserunners and striking out four.

TBR 85-56
BOS 84-58 (1.5 GB; lead wildcard by 6.5)

The Yankees are half an inning from falling to fourth place in the division as well. How about those Blue Jays? 8 straight wins, including a 3 game sweep of the division-leading Rays.

The Jays do this to their fans (like me). They limp along until September and then have a charge that makes everyone think "Maybe if things had broken right..."

The only interesting part about this charge is that every game seems to be against the 5 teams fighting for 3 playoff spots (if you included the Yankees).

They are in the middle of a stretch of 28 games where it's the three teams ahead of them in the AL East (TB/BOS/NYY) or the two teams that might also be fighting for the AL Central/wild card as well (MIN/CHW).

If they had gone on a 2007-Rockies-run at the start of it (instead of a good-but-not-good-enough 14-6 run), this would be even more interesting.

Toronto makes me sick. What they just did is bad for baseball.

Garza absolutely owns the Jays.

Garza absolutely owns the Jays.

And Purcey owns the Rays. 2 games started , 16 IP, 1ER, 18K, 3BB, 11 hits

He wants the Rays to win, Biff. He thinks it's a sin if the Red Sox win again.

I would think it would be LA who was making him sick.

Probably that by beating Tampa, it increases the chance of Boston catching up and winning the division.
Which, I assume, is "bad for baseball".

Well, the Angels were a big help to the Rays earlier this summer, as they won 6 in a row against the Red Sox.

I was referring to the Dodgers, AG. Check Robert's profile and see where he lives.

I would think it would be LA who was making him sick.

Or, specifically, Manny Ramirez, who is carrying the Dodgers to the playoffs...
