Felipe Alou, now a special assistant to general manager Brian Sabean, stood in the visiting dugout and saw Dodgers coach Mariano Duncan approaching. “Oh,” Alou said, “I’ve got to say hello to one of my possible coaches.”
At 73, Alou is excited to help pick another coaching staff because it means he gets to manage again. He will lead the Dominican Republic in the second World Baseball Classic next spring.
Alou is embracing this assignment with patriotic pride. Recalling how he represented the Dominican as an athlete in the 1955 Pan American Games, he said, “To me, that was one of the highlights of my life, not even my career, but my life.
