American Idol David Cook takes batting practice with New York Mets

Refreshments were provided by the good folks at Jaerock Lee Industries.

American Idol winner David Cook took batting practice with the Mets today before their game against the San Diego Padres, and ripped a couple nice hits to right-center field while batting lefthanded under the watchful eye of David Wright.

Cook, 25, who also threw out the first pitch, has the exact same birthday as Wright—Dec. 20, 1982. He grew up playing Legion baseball in Blue Springs, Mo., and was a fan of the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.

In fact, Cook was wearing a Chiefs baseball cap—signed by, of all people, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and former Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko—when he hit the field. The Mets promptly gave him a Mets hat.

``I am a Kansas City sports fan, but I’m a baseball fan, more than anything,’’ Cook said. ``To be able to come to Shea, with all the history and the fact there’s going to be a new stadium next season, is really cool.’’

I'm pretty certain he could out-hit Pena or Gload. Sign him!

Say what you want about American Idol, but David Cook can sing. It was a great moment when he beat out the teeny-bopper the producers were pimping for the win, and he has the chance, depending on whether he has any sort of actual taste in choosing good material, to be a reasonable recording artist. The voice is there, which is at least a start.

Cook used to be a waiter at the stadium club in KC. Not sure of the years though, any one know?

Why, are you going to steal a picture of the stadium club waiters and sell it on eBay?

Ebay is so 2005. Craigslist rulz!

I took an old girlfriend to the Stadium Club buffet before a Chiefs game one year...I wanted to tell her about her brush with greatness if he indeed was the one that kept refilling our water.

Egads, he is having one awful decline phase. Something about SNL must make you peak quickly, then become unfunny really quickly (see Murphy, Eddie; Chase, Chevy).

Add Dan Ackroyd and Piscopo to that list.

Belushi, Farley Radner, and Hartman became unfunny very quickly.

too slow. Will Ferrell hasn't hit his decline yet (or has he? I haven't seen Step-Brothers)

I love Will Ferrell, but Semi-Pro was unwatchable.

Adam Sandler kinda peaked quickly too. "Billy Madison" is one of my favorite movies of all-time (yes, really!) and I haven't liked any of his movies since. "Mr. Deeds" is probably the worst movie I have ever paid money to see.

I haven't liked any of the forty or so Will Ferrell movies that have came out so far this year. I think he's funny, but it seems like a long, long time since I really liked one of his movies. I think Anchorman is the only movie where he's the star that I was really into.

I strongly disagree on Hartman.

I never noticed Ferrell's peak, honestly, so his decline is immaterial to me.

Hartman was fantastic through and through.

Lovitz still has his moments, but he's not exactly a star.

And lest we forget Jimmy Fallon. That guy's hilarious, what with his impressions and all.

And what about the people who peaked long after SNL, like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ben Stiller and Harry Shearer?

Or long before SNL, like Chris Elliot? You can't deny Get a Life.

Sure I can. Fingernails, meet blackboard. Blackboard, these are some fingernails. I'm sure you two can make some god-awful annoying noise together.

But nothing half as annoying as every single moment of being exposed to Chris Elliott.

You have to add Gotfried, Guest, Wayans and Mohr to the list.

The biggest peak after SNL, has to be Tina Fey. Never really liked her on the show (could have been that she was with Fallon all the time) but 30 Rock is one of the best shows on TV.

I guess no one else here watches American Idol so no one cares, but I agree 100% with Sam. I hate David Cook's hair and don't really like his (on-screen) personality, but the guy can SING. However, I think the "taste" thing is what might sink his career. Whenever he had free rein to choose a song on AI, he picked something horrible (IMHO). I'm afraid he's going to go down the Nickelback/Hoobastank trail. He definitely needs a good manager and producer behind him.

The guy can't sing. Unless you find singers inspired by the guy from Creed to be "good singers". That sub-Eddie Vedder style of singing is pretty damn easy to emulate. Those '90s Buzz Cuts radio rock lead singers are a dime a dozen. Literally - I can probably find a Fuel album on Amazon for 10 cents right now. Does David Cook have good taste in music? Um, no. He auditioned for American Idol.

Well played, indeed!

Painful. I was especially ticked off because they stole the "comedy about the ABA" idea I've had in my head for years and made a hash of it. There's nothing more annoying than seeing someone ruin a great idea for a comedy (see "Canadian Bacon").

I find him unbearable when he gets range to pick his material. When he does something outside of his genre, his voice quality shines through..
