An MVP Hangs In There, With Los Muchachos Del Verano

It seems like a familiar story: a baseball veteran gets to the end of his contract, can’t sign another one, and finds new life, and love, in another country. In this case, it’s EA Sports’ long lost MVP Baseball 2005.

Discontinued when 2K Sports won the exclusive third-party license from Major League Baseball, the game still retains a relatively sizeable fan base in its exile, thanks largely to a strong modding culture for the PC version. And through this, MVP is now something of an unofficial national baseball video game in countries like the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico.

That’s thanks to “MVP Caribe,” the largest and best known of the game’s “Total Conversion Mods,” the full-featured remakes that completely change the game’s rosters, teams, uniforms, ballparks and even its audio. Downloaded more than half a million times since it was first released in October 2007, it’s the product of 10 modders, using a tool set developed and used by the robust MVP modding community.

I loved the High Heat series, and played Diamond Mind fanatically until switching to a mac.

I only have a wii, as far as console.

Any suggestions?

MLB Power Pros 2008 and a classic controller are your best bet on the Wii, if you don't mind the cartoony graphics and shaky trade AI. It's deeper than it looks, has a deep franchise mode that includes an expansion option, and is a lot of fun to play, but the rosters are (obviously) out of date.

Exclusive third-party rights. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony can make their own first-party video games, of which only Sony takes advantage of.

Similarly, it is only for realistic-styled games, which is why Konami's "Power Pro" and Humongous' "Backyard Baseball" series have had installments since 2005.

The mod includes Ernesto Jerez's home run call, which makes it even more awesome.

I think there is a community that still comes up with updates rosters annually for the PS2 version of MVP baseball.

I loved EA's baseball games more than the 2k series. EA's NCAA baseball game which came out for a few years after 2k sports bought MLB third-party license, was a lot of fun too.
