Andy Pettitte Moves Closer to Return - NYTimes.com

What’s the over/under on how many secons before Vazquez gets booed?

For all the tumult that has engulfed the Yankees’ rotation during Andy Pettitte’s absence, it will probably not look much different when he returns.

For one thing, Javier Vazquez will be back. And A. J. Burnett’s spot is safe, regardless of how he pitched Wednesday night against Oakland. Manager Joe Girardi announced these moves about 30 minutes before Pettitte continued making progress in his recovery from a left groin injury, throwing 55 pitches at a high intensity.

Given their lead, the Yankees can afford to let Burnett and Vazquez try to right the ship. If one of them can return to adequacy, that'll be enough.

Meanwhile, they can rest Hughes, and build up Pettitte gradually. Having Nova/Moseley/Mitre/Gaudin gives then a lot of spare SPs/long-men to absorb the extra IP.

CC and Pettitte (if healthy) are locks for the postseason rotation. I suspect that every other starter will be auditioning throughout September.

I think Hughes is a lock if healthy.

I think snapper's correct, but at this point it doesn't make me particularly happy.

I think Hughes is a lock if healthy.

I'd like to think so, but the problem with Hughes, Burnett and Vazquez hasn't been their health; it's been their tendency to run up early pitch counts and give up big innings. They're like the little girl with the curl. Right now I'm in a 100% "show me" mode about all three of them, and so far 92, 87 and 78 haven't show me much at all. If the playoffs started today, I'd feel more comfortable with Nova in game 3 than any of them.
