I know nothing about Peter Bourjos, although the Jays really (really, really, really, really) do need someone else in the organization who can handle CF.
It's just a strange collection of players.
Also, "or" what? IOW, instead of whom?
Way too much to give up for 1 year of Halladay. Look at the Mets package for Santana.
It is a refreshing change of pace to here this from someone other than a Yankees or Red Sox fan.
Izturis and Wood, no?
So you're saying that the Jays should trade Halladay for nothing?
God, the Twins got destroyed in that trade.
And then Melvin decided that Gomez was the player he really wanted for Hardy. It seems like we made need to admit to ourselves that a great number of general managers have different opinions on the quality of various talents around MLB.
God, they're dumb.
Is it clear whether or not Melvin wanted Gomez, or whether he just really wanted to get rid of Hardy's contract before he got his arbitration raise?
We already know this, and admit this, and it's not hard to see why they would, given the needs of their teams, the biases of their scouts, and the leanings of the organizational philosophies.
But all of that doesn't change the fact that the players the Twins got for Santana have been virtually useless during their time in a Twins' uniform.
Utility man? I suppose he would be a nice addition.
He had other offers. The Pirates offered him Doumit or Capps, for example.
Bourjos is not a power threat, but has at least some pop unlike Willits. Over the last 2 years he has 15 homers and 24 triples. Defensively he could probably be gold glove caliber in 2010. Last year he made a great improvement in his plate discipline, adding 30 walks while losing 20 strikeouts. He's young enough to improve a lot as a hitter. I think his upside is something like 280/350/425 which would be really cool with his defense, but he might top out at 260/300/370 which is backup OF/defensive replacement status.
As sad as it may be, the greatness of Roy Halladay is already gone for the Blue Jays. Just like there's nothing the Angels can do to bring back the 330/380/550 Vlad. What the Jays have to look forward to is one more year of an 18 game winner on a likely sub-.500 4th place team and then some draft picks.
What another team has to look forward to is one year of a top of the rotation starter. That can be really valuable, but trading 3-4 good players who you've got under team control for 3 years each is just too much to give up. I'd like Halladay, but not at that price.
Aybar is a big get; plus glove, solid bat Doesn't steal bases or show power, but a .776 OPS for a 25 year old SS with three years under control is awfully valuable.
Saunders is a great guy to trade, though I suspect Alex A realizes that 'wins' and 'quality' are not necessarily synonomous. Viewed as a 180 cheap league-averageish innings there's value there. But not 'this is going to help the next good Blue Jays team' value either.
Bourjos puts up a 770 OPS...in AA in a hitters context. He is an ok guy to own but his value is mostly in cost-control. You can buy Coco Crisp for a couple of mil, apparently so that's pretty much the upside scenario for Bourjos and there's less risk of failure there. Like with Saunders, the right concept for Angels to trade....and perhaps the right for a team in another division to use to try to get to 90 wins cheaply to make a run, but not enough for the Jays I'd guess.
Rally, your projections say he's a slightly below average SS. Do your eyes say the same? I've always liked Aybar's defense, but if he's slipped, this could be a great time to sell. I gotta think Halladay for a declining SS, an average pitcher and a B- prospect is a pretty good deal for the Angels. Now if Aybar's a gold glove SS, it's not that great.
