AP: Cardinals activate Isringhausen from DL

Cardinals closer Jason Isringhausen came to the ballpark on Saturday expecting to throw one final bullpen tuneup before coming off the 15-day disabled list next week. Instead, he was activated.

Right-hander Anthony Reyes also was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Right-hander Mark Worrell and outfielder Joe Mather were optioned to Memphis.

General manager John Mozeliak said Isringhausen would likely be used in middle relief until he regains his confidence.

Mozeliak also said ace right-hander Chris Carpenter, the 2005 NL Cy Young winner, would seek a second opinion for what he termed chronic pain in his surgically-repaired elbow. Carpenter made only one start last year and had been on schedule to return to the rotation in mid-July.

Isringhausen said he believed Carpenter, who was examined by team physician Dr. George Paletta on Friday, would see Dr. James Andrews on Monday.

“He’s just been experiencing some discomfort and it’s been going on for a little bit,” Mozeliak said. “It needs to be addressed.”

Dr. Andrews? Hmm.

ugh, not against Issy, but sending Mather down when we don't have Albert just doesn't make much sense.

Yeah, but it kinda makes sense if you look at their current rotation: Lohse, Looper, Pineiro (just off DL), Todd Wellemeyer, and Mitchell Boggs.

I still can't believe they have the 2nd-best record in the NL at 41-29.

The Cardinals' bench is now Rule 5er Brian Barton, Brendan Ryan, Aaron Miles and Jason La Rue. If BTF had a grumpy old Cardinals fan, he'd be spending a lot of time talking about La Russa's inability to manage a bullpen, 2416 wins or not.

I don't think it's bullpen management that is the problem. The starting pitcher injuries have seemed to be the primary problem.

When you give up 20 runs, and use up your staff, having 8 in the bullpen for a few days isn't terrible, even if it means you have no bench.

On the bright side, Mather going down means Duncan will play everyday regardless of matchups - increasing trade value? Or just figuring out if he can be a fulltime player?

KJOK, it's kinda hard to use up a seven-man bullpen, even in a 20-run game. Especially when one of the relievers is about to be optioned out for a new reliever and you get one inning from Aaron Miles.

I'd guess the real reason for this is that the Cardinals needed a long man in Reyes, and from La Russa's army of one-inning and one-out relievers, Chris Perez would've been the odd man out. That's kinda silly-looking because Perez has the best stuff on the staff and may very well be its best short guy.

I can't find anyone like Duncan whose ever gotten much in a trade. I wish Cardinals fans would stop dreaming about that.

Duncan by himself isn't going to get much, but I can see a possibility of Duncan, Reyes and Freese(or McClellen) generating something decent. The real problem is that there isn't a super strong need for anything that a trade would help the team.

Yes of course we need a front line starting pitcher, just not sure if there are any out there to be had.

we have a strong need for a secondbaseman, but I don't think the team recognizes that there is a need. Shortstop unfortunately is locked by Izturis and his overall value has been positive. Second has been a weakness but again I don't see it as something that the team sees as a weakness.

It's not that guys like Duncan can't get you a starter on their own, it's that guys like Duncan can't get you anything but maybe a toolsy A-baller. Teams that are willing to give a spot to a professional hitter type like Duncan, who is already developed and who doesn't contribute on defense or the basepaths, do so because they realize they can easily pick one up without using any significant resources. Guys like Matt Stairs sit on the free agent market willing to sign for less than a Stairs type would likely get in arbitration, and AAA always has a few guys who might hit a bit less than Duncan but who have no real openings and will come cheaply. Even though our outfield is a bit crowded, Duncan's trade value is so low that it's better for us to keep him around for situations like Albert's injury. Yes it's crazy in a world where Carlos Lee has a $3 billion contract and half of the AL's DHs are hitting like middle infielders, but it's the way it is.

Ok, let's not trade Duncan. I have been convinced. But I still read something into the decision to send down Mather, which is going to dictate that Duncan plays everyday.

When I looked a few days ago, it seemed that everyone but Kennedy and Isringhausen was having a better than expected year and they've overachieved on their expected wins.

No evaluation one way or another on LaRussa. I guess the anti argument would be that if he's so smart, why couldn't he get this record out of them the last 3 years?
