AP: Cardinals’ Carpenter goes on disabled list with arthritis, elbow twinge

Cardinals staff ace Chris Carpenter was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday after an MRI exam in St. Louis revealed arthritis and a previously undiscovered impingement in his right elbow.

Carpenter, limited to one start this season, will rest for the next 10 days to two weeks and will be re-examined after that. The condition sometimes requires surgery but also can be cured by rest and treatment.
...
With Carpenter unable to make his previously scheduled start Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, left-hander Randy Keisler was called up from Triple-A Memphis to pitch.

Ouch, good thing Carpenter signed that extension. That was just this past offseason, right?

Which one of these buttons above is "panic"?

if we had an average pitching coach like say Mazzone I would be worried, but with Duncan I'm not worried at all (although Keisler coming up isn't really a resounding positive)

They'll be right, Central will be tight till the very end

Wait, Keisler's really coming up? I assumed that was just someone's idea of a sick joke.

Yahoo has the best roto game out there -- for free.

Obviously, Carpenter will be impossible to replace, and his loss puts the rest of the young pitching staff in jeopardy of blowing up trying to bear his weight. Maybe he can pitch through the pain this season without making his condition worse and correct it in the offseason, but for the long term, it's probably better to go ahead and fix it now.

Luckily, the Cards can probably absorb this hit and still compete in the NL Central.

Yeah, Dave Duncan has done great things with Mark Mulder. He is a good pitching coach, just not historicly great like Sain or Leo.

wow, point to a failure, ok Mazzone has done great things with Victor Zambrano and Jason Schmidt. he's a good pitching coach but he hasn't caught/coached 7 different cy young winners has he?
