AP: Cubs chairman says no special instructions for bleachers

Cubs chairman Crane Kenney said Wednesday the team did not tell security personnel in the left field bleachers to crack down on fans who might boo or harass struggling outfielder Alfonso Soriano.

Soriano dropped a fly ball in the ninth inning Sunday in Pittsburgh, helping the Pirates rally to a victory. One season ticket holder told the Chicago Tribune that crowd control personnel told fans Monday they were instructed by supervisors to use a no-tolerance policy for anyone cursing at Soriano, or harassing him.

“The rules have not changed in the ballpark, which have consistently been booing is part of the game and anything related to booing. But profanity and anything racial is not allowed, regardless of where it happens in the ballpark,” Kenney said before Wednesday night’s game.
...
Kenney said that recently acquired Jim Edmonds was booed much louder this week than Soriano.

Does he keep track of such things?  Do they use LaTroy Hawkins as the benchmark, and adjust accordingly on the ratings (”0.6 on the LaTroy scale”)?

I remember fans hurling kiloLaTroys of abuse at Candy Maldonaldo and Dave Smith.

Have you ever seen a Wrigley usher? I don't think they've ever heard of the fantasy baseball. Or the internet. Or this new-fangled thing called the television.

This is hogwash. Cubs fans don't boo, at least not enough to indicate displeasure. We've come to accept losing much more than fans in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, or the South Side. It's just a bleacher party.

I was disappointed at the lack of booing for Jim Edmonds this Monday. The only time I heard any was after that ugly strikeout.

So's your mom.

Edmonds will no longer be a Cub a week from now. If Piniella distrusts him to the point of starting Reed Johnson against tough righthanders, he's just not going to use him. All that remains is for Hendry to get on board the clue bus.

And I have to say--Edmonds's bat is noticeably slower than it was last year, which is saying something. He had no bat speed last year. Now, he's at slo-pitch level. It's a joke. Anything more than low 80s, and he can't even make contact, let alone pull it.

Yes, but he still has that beautiful hair.
