AP: Dazed [Carlos] Gomez carted off field

A dazed Carlos Gomez was carted off the field in the fifth inning on Friday night after the Minnesota Twin took a throw from Ivan Rodriguez off the head while stealing second base.

Gomez got a good jump on the pitch by Armando Galarraga and slid headfirst into the bag just as Rodriguez’s throw got there. The ball hit off Gomez’s helmet and ricocheted well into left field. Gomez’s head then collided with second baseman Placido Polanco’s left knee and he lay motionless on the turf for several minutes while team doctors and Rodriguez rushed to check on him.
...
Gomez did not lose consciousness and was deemed OK by team physicians after being examined in the clubhouse, the Twins said.

Did they tag him out?!

Nope. I don't know if you can call someone "safe" after he gets hit in the head with a baseball and then kneed in the head, but he wasn't out.

So, Gomez has a .272/.299/.379 batting. He has 13 SB and has only been caught once. His ZR is off the charts at .959, and he looks like an incredible defensive CFer just by watching him.

If he can maintain this type of production, will Twin fans be happy with his production?

That makes him an elite offensive player by Twins' standards.

Obviously, he's not a good hitter yet. But he adds a ton of value everywhere else on the field. Now, hitting is the most important part of the game but that's not a disastrous batting line for a 22 year old.

He's a pro in the field, but his batting line is ominous. He has terrible plate discipline, and is playing for a manager that reinforces his bad habits. I don't expect much improvement from Delmon Young on this front either. Gardenhire loves his hackers, and thinks OBP is about trying to draw a walk with runners in scoring position. The end result is team that consistently ranks near the bottom in runs scored.

I thought it was interesting that Pudge was so involved in the huddle around second base. Usually it seems that opposing players, even when they are directly involved in the cause of an injury like Rodriguez was, generally steer clear or maybe stand nearby and talking to a teammate of the injured player.

I'm surprised his ZR is that high. I'm no scout, but in the games I've seen he appears to take some rally torturous routes out there
