AP: Florida Marlins acquire third baseman Wes Helms from Philadelphia Phillies

The Florida Marlins acquired third baseman Wes Helms and cash from the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named later on Saturday night… The Phillies had designated Helms for assignment on Wednesday, and had 10 days to either trade him or put him on waivers. The 31-year-old Helms, who opened last season as the starting third baseman for Philadelphia, is due $2.9 million this season.
...
To make room for Helms, the Marlins designated Jason Wood for assignment.
...
Helms batted .246 with five homers and 39 RBIs in 280 at-bats last year in Philadelphia.

Maybe this transaction will spure Harvey’s to recount “Great Wes Helms moments in Brewers History”.

That should really shore up their defense.

What the ####. Cantu is just about to get 3b eligibility for the first time this season. What's the point of this?

To screw your fantasy team.

See...the Marlins DO spend money on players. Helms is making double what the next highest paid player on the team is making. Not many teams are willing to add 10% to their payroll in a trade.

This spending crap has to stop.

Seriously, outside of my fantasy team, Cantu hit .366 during ST. He's 5 years younger than Helms. Helms is not really demonstrably better. Why is this the move that Florida chooses to make?

(And yes, of course, I realize that ST stats don't matter. But still.)

Cox's old 3rd base coaches can't live without Helms, it seems.

My understanding is that Cantu is awful defensively at 3b. Atrociously awful.

When someone's "traded" after dfa, then that means he's being auctioned off with starting price of a nickel. Noone's paying the salary except PHI (- a nickel?). Sure they still have memories of Helm's being worth a nickel (Helm's hit 20+ homers 2 seasons ago for them), but he's not taking Cantu's position. Cantu's been hitting and defending like a good 3b.

My thoughts were that Helms would play 1B against LHP since Jacobs is brutal against lefties. Or maybe Helms will play third and Cantu 1st against LHP. In any case, I can't imagine anyone thinks Helms can be an everyday 3B anymore.

Levski - BPro's (much maligned) fielding metrics agree with you completely. They've got him at -20R/150G (v. Avg), -7 (v. Repl) for a 71 game sample size spread over three seasons.

With the possible exception of the team that he had a 149 OPS+ for 2 years ago... the same team that had Dallas MacPherson and Jorge Cantu "battle" for the starting 3rd base job this spring.

God help Marlins fans.
