AP: Flu hits Red Sox; Delcarmen sent home

Boston, which has won five straight games and nine of 10 entering Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, were without reliever Manny Delcarmen and catcher Jason Varitek. Delcarmen changed out of his uniform and into street clothes and went home about an hour before the game started. Varitek, who appeared weak while walking around the clubhouse, was also expected to be sidelined with the flu.
....
During his pregame meeting with the media, Francona said second baseman Dustin Pedroia was the backup to Tuesday’s starting catcher Kevin Cash.

“Everybody who has always volunteered, (Alex) Cora or (Mike) Lowell, guys who say they can do it, are on the DL,” Francona said. “Pedroia was next in line and, at this point, as soon as somebody tells you they can do it, that’s good enough.”

AP: Beckett pulled from start for stiff neck

Josh Beckett was scratched from his start for the Boston Red Sox against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night because of a stiff neck.
...
Like a number of Red Sox players, Beckett had been suffering from the flu within the past week. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he was over his bout with the flu, but felt stiffness when he arrived at the Fenway Park.

“He’d been sick as a number of our players are, so we had taken some precautionary measures and pulled David Pauley from his start in Pawtucket in case something happened,” Francona said… It was unclear when he would make his next start.

In October, Kotchman caught the flu in Fenway and Garret Anderson got Pink-Eye, so this is a little payback...

I never understood why professional athletes don't appear to avail themselves of flu shots.

Maybe they did.

If the shot doesn't protect against the primary strains that are going around, which is what happened this year, there's not much you can do.

Sounds like it's time for a Ferris Bueller fake granny death so someone can go on the BL.

I never understood why professional athletes don't appear to avail themselves of flu shots.

Flu shots are really there to protect the elderly and infirm (those whose lives might be threatened by getting the flu) by also protecting those who are in close contact with them. Given that there is a limited supply of flu shots each year, I think it's best to save flu shots for those whom it might benefit the most. Players don't really "need" them.

AP: Matsuzaka scratched from start with flu-like symptoms
Daisuke Matsuzaka was scratched from his start for the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night because of flu-like symptoms. Jon Lester was to take his place against the Los Angeles Angels.
...
Matsuzaka (4-0) is latest Red Sox player to be hit by a flu-like bug making its way through the Boston clubhouse. Beckett, Jason Varitek, Manny Delcarmen and Clay Buchholz are among the others who have been affected.

Typical Red Sox. 25 players, 25 toilets.

God damn. Are they all making out together on off days? It would be hilarious if it weren't affecting two of my most valuable stat-league pitchers...
