AP: Foot surgery to limit Cliff Lee

SEATTLE—The Seattle Mariners say left-hander Cliff Lee is recovering from minor left foot surgery and will be limited when pitchers and catchers report to spring training this month.

The team announced Monday that its biggest offseason acquisition had surgery Friday in his native Arkansas to remove a bone spur that broke loose and was floating in his left foot.

Funny thing is, if Mets had made a trade for Lee, and this article came out, there would be a backlash at the mgmt, a "woe is me" thread and all the falafalooza.

But Z-man, he be invincible. Surely he must have given a physical to Lee and et al. Though in his defence, this explains the low price they had to pay for him.

Awesome! First post magically transformed this into a Mets thread, and we all know we needed more of those. Get the #### out of here.

Unless they're doing full body scans, I don't see how this could be something you'd catch.

I doubt this had much of an effect on the price since it's considered minor. I think the fact that Lee and his agent told everyone they wanted to test free agency, making him a one-year pick-up in all likelihood for most teams not named the yankees, had a much greater effect.

the mets dont need this for the fan base to call ownership worthless, i think the torrealba signing with the padres after trying to get an offer from them should do just fine for this week

This is supposed to add another foot to his fastball.

Really Mets fans? Why would you hijack a thread that has nothing to do with you?

Hate to break to ya, but I'm the first Met fan to post in this thread. Really, Met fans don't really hijack threads much anymore since everyone was given the ability to submit articles.

The first guy is a Braves fan who is poking a little fun at the Mets. The Mets are an easy target right now and there's usually someone who will respond.

Russlan, I should apologize for making the assumption. Sorry about that.

There's absolutely no need to apologize and let's just end it at that before we get accused of hijacking the thread.

Seriously, why hijack this for the Mets when it could easily be done for Lee imaginarily playing for any team? It's easy to extrapolate what the conversations would look like! Let's have a look.

Angels: No problem, Scioscia is great at handling adversity. Plus, Lackey missed time each of the past two years.
Astros: Ugh. When will they sell this team?
Athletics: Moneyball!
Blue Jays: A bad sign for the post-Riccardi era
Indians: Typical of the Dolan ownership
Braves: So much for building another Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine rotation.
Brewers: It's looking like Ben Sheets all over again.
Cardinals: Will this hurt the chances of a Pujols extension?
Cubs: Typical Hendry.
Diamondbacks: The Eric Byrnes contract is at the root of this problem.
Dodgers: McCourt can't afford these types of injuries with that divorce settlement he's facing.
Giants: Wow! Sabean finally signs someone as young as Lee and look what happens. That'll teach him.
Mariners: See Post #1.
Marlins: This could hurt their chances of trading him in July to reduce payroll.
Mets: See Post #1.
Nationals: It's Bowden's fault.
Orioles: Who cares? They're not going to contend in the AL East with or without Lee.
Padres: Now they have to trade Adrian Gonzalez.
Phillies: Good thing they have Halladay and play in the NL East.
Pirates: Make that 18 years under .500.
Rangers: Does this affect the Nolan Ryan/Mike Maddux no-pitch count program and/or the sale of the team?
Rays: They have lots of good, young players who can fill in while Lee is out.
Red Sox: I'm surprised Theo didn't have a specific injury clause to cover this.
Reds: Well, Dusty can't hurt this arm.
Rockies: Will Lee be able to drive his kids to those great Denver schools after surgery?
Royals: What's the over/under on team wins now, 65?
Tigers: Leyland better stock up on his supply of smoky treats.
Twins: This better not impact the Mauer negotiations.
White Sox: Can't wait for what Ozzie says
Yankees: They can just buy someone to fill the void.

The Mets are pioneering many areas of sports medicine: by counter-example. First concussions, and now orthopedics.

From TFA:
"We decided Lee should have the surgery as soon as possible, rather than try to pitch with the discomfort during the year," general manager Jack Zduriencik said in a release Monday. "To get it out of the way and have it behind us is important."

Contrast that with:

“In our review of the player’s medical records in the acquisition of J.J. Putz, we were aware that he had a bone spur before the trade.  He had the same condition in 2008 and was able to pitch with it.  J.J. underwent an exam during Spring Training and an additional exam and MRI before he was cleared to play in last year’s World Baseball Classic.  Unfortunately the spur did flare up again in May, and he missed the rest of the season.  We are happy to hear he is feeling well, and wish him success with the White Sox.”?

Yeah they do. I think half the posts in every topic about So-and-so signs with the such-and-such are to the effect of, "Why didn't the Mets beat this offer?"

Awesome! First post magically transformed this into a Mets thread, and we all know we needed more of those.

And we need more Red Sox and Yankees threads - perhaps a few more Johhny Damon threads to kill two birds with one stone.
   15. Voros McCracken, Human Shield Posted: February 09, 2010 at 01:18 PM (#3456698)
Johnny Damon has narrowed down his teams to the Red Sox, Yankees and Mets. It remains to be seen whether Damon will make the Hall of Fame and what effect steroids will have on that decision. There's also wide disagreement over the causes of the civil war, having Petco as the sponsor of your park and whether this nude photo of Jessica Alba is real.
   16. cercopithecus aethiops Posted: February 09, 2010 at 04:09 PM (#3456820)
So, the kind of injury that essentially ended Joe DiMaggio's career six decades ago now requires only minor surgery. That's pretty cool, no?

Oh, and that photo is most definitely real.
