AP: Giants could be without Lowry until end of April

San Francisco Giants pitcher Noah Lowry needs surgery after a recent bout of wildness and is probably out until the end of April… The Giants said Thursday that Lowry was diagnosed with exertional compartment syndrome. According to MayoClinic.com, it is “an exercise-induced neuromuscular condition that causes pain, swelling and sometimes even disability in affected muscles of the legs or arms” and seems to affect primarily athletes in their 20s.
...
“The thing we wanted to do was identify the problem and it looks like we’ve done that,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “Despite it’s not great news, it is good news to have found out what’s going on, what the problem is.”

Lowry could resume throwing in two or three weeks, but Bochy acknowledged the lefty probably won’t be available to pitch until the end of April.

“This is something that I don’t know enough about it to know how rare it is, but you don’t hear about it a lot,” Bochy said. “It’s not like this is a common occurrence in baseball players.”

So much for the playoffs.

I love the internet research. Would have preferred WebMD's input, though.

Bhaakon,

Did you have to win the thread with the very first post?

So does this mean that the Giants will finish last, instead of finishing fifth?

That's the spirit!

I suppose that there's some solace in the fact that this lowers the chances of acquiring Crede and throwing a huge contract at him (Noah was the rumored trade bait, iirc).

So, Lowry hurts when he works out? Is that it?

"this lowers the chances of acquiring Crede"

Bhaak -- That won't stop Kenny Williams.

Well what will, damn it? A wooden stake, silver bullets, a pentagram of grave dirt, or perhaps some kind of mediocre-but-speedy platoon fourth outfielder masquerading as a full time player...

So this guarantees Correia and Sanchez make the rotation? Or is Merkin Valdez making a push? He sounded pretty dominant the other day against the Royals.

I have this...it basically ended my time as a baseball player (in HS, but it killed my senior year).

Its really rare in baseball players, but its common in motorcross riders. It hurts like a ############...it used to make me puke in the middle of games.

The surgery is pretty nasty. They slice open the fascia around the muscle. I was told from two different doctors that I could expect a 3 months rehab, so I'm surprised at the numbers being thrown around here. The surgeons I went to couldn't promise me that I'd be able to throw at full strength ever again after the surgery; in fact the surgery only has a 60-70% success rate.

Anyways, this story seems to really downplay what he has, and I feel for the guy, though its nice to see someone else with this injury from throwing, in a misery loves company kind of way.

This makes it sound like the wildness is the reason for the surgery.

Oh, this is terrible news.

He's gonna have a wildectomy. What's the problem with that?

If you want to see what he's getting, go to the wikipedia page for that type of surgery. Don't do it if you're eating, cause you'll be booting it right back up.

Okay, you weren't kidding zoperino. I would never make it as a surgeon.

He's gonna have a wildectomy.

Is this the procedure that can be done in ten minutes?
   19. Bhaakon Posted: March 07, 2008 at 04:00 AM (#2707955)
I don't know about 10 minutes, but it doesn't take long to amputate the pitching arm. Sadly, they've yet to divide the "wildectomy" and "talentectomy" into separate procedures.

Is Lowry getting a fasciotomy? If he gets that procedure, call the fat lady, there's almost no chance that he'll recover to 100%. That's a highly invasive surgery.
