AP: Grievance filed over collapse of Torrealba’s talks with Mets

The players’ union has filed a grievance over the collapse of catcher Yorvit Torrealba’s talks with the New York Mets last fall.

Torrealba and the Mets reached a preliminary agreement on a $14.4 million, three-year contract last November, a deal that was subject to a physical and never was publicly confirmed by the team.

New York said several days later it had ended negotiations with Torrealba, leading to speculation that a medical exam left the Mets with concerns about his throwing shoulder.

Who leaks these things to the press? Isn't it usually the player's agent? If not, I could see how he might have a case.

If he wasn't able to pass the physical, how would he have a case? All the Mets have to show is that their doctor felt that there was a higher than usual chance that his shoulder either wouldn't be at full strength, or was at greater than usual risk of injury.

I'm generally mistrustful of management actions, given their history, but the whole point of requiring players to undergo physicals before contracts are finalized is to allow teams to assess risk, after all.

And what's worse for the player, being left hanging or having the team come out and say "He's broke and we don't want him"? Some days I just don't follow this union's reasoning...

Well, but no where in the article does it say that the physical actually took place. It says that the deal was contingent on a physical, not that Torrealba took a physical. If there never was a physical done I could sort of see the union's argument. OTOH, the Mets could have said something like, "We backed out of the deal because we realized that he can't hit."
