AP: Gross singles in 11th, Rays beat Yankees

It’s mid-May and Tampa Bay is in first place?!?!?

Gabe Gross singled with no outs in the 11th inning to drive in the first run Mariano Rivera has allowed all season, giving Tampa Bay a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees and sending the Rays into first place in the AL East.

Cliff Floyd began the 11th with a single and pinch-runner Jonny Gomes stole second before Gross delivered the winner up the middle on a 1-1 pitch. Rivera (0-1) had not allowed a run in 14 previous appearances.
...
Tampa Bay has won a club-record 11 straight at home and is a half-game ahead of Boston in the AL East after the Red Sox lost 5-4 at Baltimore. It’s the first time the Rays have sat alone atop the division standings beyond the first week of a season.

At 23-16, the Rays are seven games over .500 for the first time in the team’s 11 seasons.

Rallying, only to lose it later, was a nice touch. Very Bravesian.

Funny, I'd call it Giantsian, but that would indicate they can score runs.

I've found myself making a point of checking Tampa Bay's scores more and more and even "watched" the last four innings of tonight's game on Gameday. I hope the cities of Tampa and St. Pete notice them pretty soon here and they start getting some well-deserved crowds. Attendance tonight was under 17,000 - playing the Yankees with a chance to move into first place. Granted it's only May, but, come on, this might have arguably been the most important game in Rays' history (which, of course says A LOT more about Rays' history than it does about tonight's game).

They're a very good looking team; I hope they keep playing this well the rest of the season.

And Tampa's finally got Cliff Floyd back.

... for at least a couple of days.

Attended tonight's game. Despite the low attendance, it is the first time I've been to a Yanks/Sox game there (in about 12 total games)and seen/heard more home fans than away fans FWIW.

Retirees on a fixed income + high gas prices + an uninspiring Yankee team = the phenomenon in #5.

You guys think your gas prices are high...

yeah, me too.

Imagine if the Rays make the World Series and have to play the Cubs? It could present a problem for Dejesus Freak!

Kazmir, Shields, Jackson, Garza and Sonnastine is an interesting rotation. I hope they can keep it up.

Jackson really seems to be picking up steam. Someone (Kevin Goldstein?) wrote recently that a team should never give up on the too young and the too talented.

I may give up golf out of respect for the Yankees' once potent offense.

Damn Yankees.

I am cool with Tampa doing well, but man the Yankees are craptacular right now. I understand why and all(injuries and Hughes and Kennedy), but it's a little disheartening to get our asses kicked by Tampa(even in their improved form).

Most impressive to me is the bullpen turnaround. Wheeler, Howell, Glover, Troy Percival's re-animated corpse--not half bad.

That's easy to say but there's a significant amount of "he's just not going to do it here" with a lot of these I'd think. Whether it's needing a change in scenery, coaching, outlook, motivation of being traded or whatever but I'd imagine some of these turnarounds are fueled mentally by some of those factors and not just the talent breaking through. I'd be hard pressed to believe Hamilton would've been able to do it with the Rays (though that'd be such a sick team for the extended future if he were doing it there).

Current example: Anthony Reyes might make something of himself but it simply isn't going to happen in St. Louis especially with LaDuncan running the show.

Ned Colletti is a moron. It's simple as that.

The problem is, what happens when the owner is also a moron?

Baltimore comes directly to mind.

Best part of the game last night (other than maybe Matsui's HR) was Leiter mentioning the comparison between Jackson and Gooden. I think maybe a sentence into it, after Leiter is pointing out that Jackson pitches nothing like a young Gooden, Leiter realizes they were compared because they were both black and sort of verbally makes his way to the exit before Singleton can pick up on it.

Navarro came over from the Dodgers too right? Two different trades, but that's a lot of talent to get from one team for guys like Toby Hall and Lance Carter and the other filler that the D-Rays sent the Dodgers. Ruggiano might turn into a useful ballplayer too.
