AP: Kapler has homer, 2 doubles in Brewers’ 9-7 win over New York Mets

Gabe Kapler has gone from minor league manager to major league hassle for opposing pitchers. Kapler, who managed in the Red Sox organization last season, homered for the second straight day, doubled twice and drove in three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 9-7 on Sunday.

“I just think overall it gives you a different perspective on how to approach an at-bat, how to approach a day,” Kapler said. “I wouldn’t try to label it—surreal, spectacular. I’m just playing baseball, enjoying being at the ballpark, enjoying being in the clubhouse, enjoying winning games, enjoying being with my teammates.”

The 32-year-old Kapler came out of retirement during the offseason and has four home runs in 26 at-bats. The last time Kapler had at least four homers in a season was 2004, with Boston. He didn’t get No. 4 that season until July 21, in his 159th at-bat.

This reminds me of when Kevin Elster came out of retirement and hit three homers in a game for the Dodgers, very early in the 2000 season. The rest of his year went hmmmmm, not great but not terrible. Then he retired again.

I predict that Kapler will not retire again until after 2010 or so. but we shall see. In the meantime, the challenge is to prove that this isn't just Gabe Gross using a pseudonym to try to get publicity.

Well, his hitting from the opposite side of the plate from Gross is a fairly strong opening argument. (Yes, I realize your post was in jest.)

I'm unsure if Gabe Gross is Jewish. But if he is, that's a very kosher line-up in Milwaukee with Kapler, Braun and Gross. Call them the Milwaukee Jewers.

I heard the Brewers set a record of sorts when Kapler and Braun homered in the same inning earlier this year. I didn't notice if that got a thread or a mention in the dugout.

OTOH, if he did lose weight, maybe he gained flexibility which may have aided the mechanics of his swing.

Kapler was nice enough to talk to me about his experience as a Jewish baseball player- I wish him well. Braun did, too, but he was more reticent- can't say I blame either, given the potential for offense in the topic in religion.

If Gross were Jewish, that would be some kind of kosher lineup. And my efforts to convert Prince Fielder were unsuccessful- though I tried the "you already don't eat pork" argument.

I thought Braun is (half-)Jewish only in ethnicity, not religion. His mom's Catholic or similar, I believe, and that's how he was raised, IIRC.

I think the topic came up around one of the Jewish holidays, and the newspaper had a blurb.

My impressions:

1. The Brewers are on the doorstep of being awesome. 1-7 are legitimate power threats.
2. For the second straight series, Mr Imagination Willie sent up Endy to PH with a man on
and a cumbersome ox playing first. For the second straight series, Endy is not ordered to drag
a bunt down the 1B line and force Fielder to handle the ball. (worst case: a sac bunt). For
the second straight series, Endy hits into a DP.
3. Willie Mota's fist waving after a horrible inning of almost giving the Mets the game clinches
his status as The Biggest ####### In Baseball.
