AP: McClung, Brewers stifle Nationals, 5-2

[Seth] McClung was victorious in his first start in almost two years and Corey Hart and Mike Cameron homered to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Saturday night… Replacing ineffective Carlos Villanueva in the rotation, McClung (2-1) allowed two runs and four hits over five innings. He walked none and struck out four in his first start since June 18, 2006 with Tampa Bay.
...
“I just want to do whatever this team needs. I pushed my personal goals and my personal issues aside a long time ago. I feel like they really rescued me from where I was,” said McClung, who flamed out as a starter and failed as a closer in Tampa Bay.
...
After the game, the Brewers optioned OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to Triple-A Nashville and purchased the contract of IF Russell Branyan from the Sounds. Yost said Branyan would start at third base Sunday.
...
Needing some infield depth in the minor leagues, Washington signed 34-year-old Pokey Reese, who last played in the majors in 2004, to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Columbus.

The TTO King returns to Milwaukee!

Sent down at the beginning of the month after getting off to a horrible start, Turnbow has suffered a near-total command meltdown at Nashville. In 4 1/3 innings entering Saturday, he had walked an astounding 15 hitters, while allowing five hits and seven earned runs (14.54 ERA) in six outings.

Turnbow had an unfathomable 4.62 WHIP (walks and hits per innings). As a gauge, a 1.62 WHIP would be high.

Melvin indicated Turnbow's $3.2 million salary was a major factor in not releasing him.

"As long as we're paying him what we're paying him, there's no sense in doing that," Melvin said. "It's not like he's taking somebody's job."

Mat Gamel went 3-5 for AA Huntsville (with a steal of home!) on Saturday night; he's now hitting .374/.437/.646 (we won't discuss his fielding).

Does Branyan's callup mean that Gamel gets bumped up to AAA?

NTN;

Mostly good news. I don't think Russell is a panacea, but he can hit right-handed pitching. Always has.

For all the hue and cry around the pitching staff Suppan and Sheets have been quite reliable. What is most likely to happen is that just as the other spots in the rotation get a tad settled those two begin to scuffle.

Not pessimism. Just an acknowledgement of the typical ebb and flow................

AFAIK, the team hasn't yet said this will be a full platoon. That would be the logical choice, but I wonder if the team is concerned how that will affect Hall. This is the right move for this team, but Hall is owed over $15 million after this year. Not the team's highest concern right now, but something they have to keep in mind.

Fist:

It's been two months. Rickie is starting to come around but Bill is still scuffling. I love Billy to death but .160 against righties ain't helping.

Be nice if Prince sorted things out as well.

I'd rather not have the 32-year-old Gabe Kapler on the roster than the 25-year-old Tony Gwynn.

But yeah, this is good news. Billy clearly needs a platoon partner, and Branyan has always crushed righties. The Crew has had trouble hitting righthanders this year, and Miller Park could see quite a few tape-measure shots to the right-field bleachers this year.

OTOH, keeping Kapler around in lieu of Gwynn could be smart because Gwynn would benefit more from regular playing time in AAA than Kapler would.

I'm happy to see this and I hope Bill gets a start or two at SS to see if he can still play it. If he can, that would free the Brewers up to trade him or JJ within the next year.
