MLB.com: Prior has tear in right shoulder capsule

Prior’s agent John Boggs confirmed Friday that the right-hander has a tear in the capsule of his right shoulder, the shoulder he had surgery on in April 2007. Prior had an examination and an MRI exam on his shoulder on Wednesday at the office of Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

Andrews is the doctor who performed the original surgery. The result was a torn capsule, which will keep Prior, 27, from throwing for at least two weeks.

“It’s a setback, but in terms of how big of a setback, we won’t know until you know how (Prior) is feeling,” Boggs said. “We just hope it’s not a major setback.

“Mark is looking at it in a positive way. He will just lay low for a few weeks and let the shoulder settle down.”

In MLB. And I'm talking about an extended stint, say, 3 months.

I can see him coming back for a couple of appearances and blowing his arm out again.

Or coming back and being spectacularly ineffective.

Sad. He could have been one of the great ones. But I'd have to think all of the injuries will have sapped too much of his effectiveness.

After Prior was shut down by the Padres earlier this month, he underwent an MRI exam and took the results to Andrews' office Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala.

Boggs said Andrews isn't sure if the tear is part of the original injury and wants to see how Prior, 27, responds to rest. Further diagnostic surgery, he added, was not planned.

"There's definitely a tear in his capsule; obviously you would have to characterize this as a setback," Boggs said.

He was my last pick in the reserve round in my keeper league. A waste of a roster spot.

Not necessarily. Having Prior not pitch for your fantasy team is better than having Barry Zito pitch for it.

True that. I also picked up Chris Carpenter in the reserve round. Hopefully he has some value next year.

I was thinking about this the other day: The Twins taking Mauer #1 obviously looks pretty smart now and has for the last few years. However, even looking at his career as it was (in other words, including the injuries), would Prior have pushed them over the top in 2002, 2003, or 2004? They won the division all three years but I wonder if he could have helped them win a World Series.

If Mark Prior can't stay healthy anymore after a couple of 130 pitch starts then no, he wouldn't have.

I agree with Flynn. His usage late in 2003 may have hastened the end but, unless he'd been used in the 50 IP per year mode, he doesn't look to have been durable to have had a long career. It doesn't seem to me that Prior's career is all that unusual in that you can find guys who were great for brief periods and then blew an arm out throughout the game's history. It makes the truly great pitchers that much more incredible. You have to be that good for a long, long time.

All I ask for is credit, not that this wasn't wholly predictable or anything.

Incidentally, when did Prior fire Boras, or conversely, when did Boras walk away from Prior?
