AP: Pena’s RBI single in 12th lifts Royals past Twins

After getting his first hit since July 3rd, Tony Pena, Jr knocked in a runner other than himself for the first time since June 24th, raising his batting average to a commanding .158 in the process, and making Trey Hillman look slightly less dumb for batting Tony Pena Jr in such a critical situation:

Tony Pena Jr. broke out of a slump at just the right time, driving in Mark Teahen with the winning run in the 12th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Pena didn’t play the first eight games of the homestand and didn’t enter the game until the eighth inning as a pinch runner. He snapped an 0-for-17 drought with a one-out single in the 11th, then followed Teahen’s double with another base hit in the 12th.

Robinson Tejeda (1-2) pitched a perfect inning to pick up the victory, while left-hander Craig Breslow (0-1) took the loss for the Twins.

How the hell do you lose a 12 inning game to the Royals and not have Joe Nathan throw a single pitch? So frustrating.

Closers are useless when pitching with anything other than a 1 to 3 run lead.

On most days, having Tony Pena, Jr. bat with runners in scoring position in extra innings twice would be considered incredibly stupid. Especially when Pena is your Designated Hitter (because he came in as a pinch runner for Butler, for some reason).

According to my broken clock here, it's exactly 10:32 PM.

It's hard to call it a "slump" when you really are that bad.

Some of us are just better at slumping than others.

The paper this morning said that Hillman didn't want to pull Pena because he was the emergency pitcher. That would be a box score for the ages. Pena enters as a pinch runner, has two at bats at DH, switches to pitcher, then switches to shortstop.

I was griping about Punto's horrible day and Everett's horrible day, and then I saw Pena's season numbers on the big board next to the letters DH. I just stopped complaining right there. Wow.
