AP: Reds call up Jay Bruce, designate Hatteberg

Outfielder Jay Bruce, the Cincinnati Reds’ top prospect, was called up from the minors Tuesday in a move that represents another step toward the franchise’s future.

The Reds promoted the 21-year-old outfielder from Triple-A Louisville and designated first baseman Scott Hatteberg for assignment, ending his three-year stay in Cincinnati. The Reds picked up Hatteberg’s $1.85 million contract option last October, when they weren’t sure whether Joey Votto would be ready to take over at first base.
...
“He’s not the savior,” Baker said. “I just want him to let him play and be himself. Don’t put any labels on him or comparisons; just let him play.”
...
The 38-year-old Hatteberg struggled in his unaccustomed role as a pinch-hitter, batting .173 overall. Jocketty tried to trade him, but there wasn’t much interest this early in the season. The Reds have 10 days to trade or release him.

“I know he wasn’t happy not playing a lot,” Jocketty said. “It was not a comfortable position for him.”

Is this the end of the line for Scott Hatteberg? He's had a hell of a run for a guy who appeared to be washed up eight years ago.

Pickin' machine.

Although Delgado has played better recently (.816 OPS in his last 106 PA), I wouldn't mind picking him up as insurance if he is willing to go to the minors.

I can't think of a better manager to break in with than Dusty Baker.

He's probably not the best, but I think you may be on to something. Just look at how Votto and Volquez have thrived under Dusty.

Not to mention that the Cubs' recent treatment of Felix Pie and the Edmonds debacle could lead one to believe that perhaps there was more of an organizational push behind the poor treatment of Choi and others that some people have previously put squarely at Dusty's feet.

I worry about Bruce's ability to handle the hot Cincinnati sun.

I wouldn't think so. He still hits righties pretty well, so you'd think he'd latch on somewhere as a pinch hitter or platoon partner.

Nice start for Bruce so far - 1 for 1, 2 BB, and a SB.

Bruce looks pretty good, but Dunn's probably still the star of the day so far. That was quite the moon shot he hit last inning.

Bruce just crushed another one for a double. 3-for-3, two walks.

For shame.
