AP: [Roberto] Hernandez cut by Indians

The Cleveland Indians cut right-hander Roberto Hernandez on Wednesday, placed outfielder David Dellucci on the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Ben Francisco and right-hander Edward Mujica from Triple-A Buffalo.

The 42-year-old Hernandez, whose 326 saves are 11th on the career list, was designated for assignment. Cleveland has 10 days to trade him or place him on waivers.

He went 3-1 with 6.23 ERA in 28 games after signing a $3.5 million, one-year contract as a free agent in December. He was hit hard Tuesday night in one inning against Philadelphia, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks.

Jeez, I'd take either of those guys on the Pirates.

Did Hernandez just get old? His raw line doesn't look that bad, other than the walks.

How many votes will he get for the HOF? He's got 326 saves people!

Wow, Thomson didn't even show up in the majors this year.

Looks like the Jays' idea to sign submediocre veterans that every other team thinks are washed up, on the hope that they can rise to mediocrity one final time, did not work. (Ohka/Thomson/V-Zam) Now they're back where they were last year, relying on their own submediocre farm system products. (exception: Marcum who is showing promise)

BTW, Josh Towers's walks/strikeout stats are great this year. He and Halladay are both giving up more than a hit per inning while walking nobody.

Belatedly, Hernandez helps the Phillies.

The ten guys ahead of him all broke into MLB at a younger age than Hernandez did, so that's... a thing.

Kool-Aid's available? Omar Minaya should get him.

I thought Roberto Hernandez got released a few weeks ago, and then I realized it was Jose Mesa.

AP:
Thomson appeared in just 18 games for Atlanta last season after missing time with finger and shoulder injuries. He signed a one-year contract with Toronto in the offseason but never pitched for the Blue Jays. Thomson developed a sore shoulder during spring training and was sent to Syracuse on a rehabilitation assignment, going 2-4 with a 4.58 ERA in seven starts.

Toronto is responsible for the remainder of his $1.5 million salary.

"We just came to the conclusion that he wasn't going to help us," Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "We weren't seeing anything that was going to be an upgrade on what we have here."
Destined for the Nats' rotation?

If this the thread for crappy pitchers, the Royals placed Scott Elarton on the DL, presumably for sucking. He'll "rehab" for a bit in Wichita, then rejoin the team, and get cut after a start or two of suckitude.

Thomson, Elarton and Hernandez soon to be snapped up for the Cardinals' rotation.

Hernandez's stats are similar to the ones he's had the last 10 or so seasons...except his ERA. He'd probably be more useful than Jose Mesa.

My understanding was that merger talks between Hernandez and Mesa a year or two ago went nowhere. They were going to be the K-Mart and Sears of relievers -- has-beens with shitty stuff left on their way out, but decent hardware (don't they have half a dozen Rolaids titles between them)?

If this is the thread for crappy pitchers, the Expos waived Jerome Williams. No one claimed him and he is being sent to AA Harrisburg.

Mesa has one (95), Hernandez has 0.

I'm sure Omar will sign Roberto.

Best career for a UConn guy, but he was no Walt Dropo.

Getting back to my first post, Hernandez was actually pretty good in '05 and '06. Unless he looks like he aged in dog years over the offseason, I think he'll end up on someone else's staff this year.

Thomson's tougher to figure, since there's an injury involved, but you have to figure that in a league where guys like Mark Redman and Brian Lawrence are considered viable rotation options, he'll get another chance somewhere down the line.

His HOF Monitor score is higher than that of Brian Giles, Scott Rolen or Jorge Posada, among others.

This just shows the value that Tony Armas has. He must be better than Omko, Hernandez and Mesa as he is still on a 25 man roster.
