The Cleveland Indians cut right-hander Roberto Hernandez on Wednesday, placed outfielder David Dellucci on the 15-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Ben Francisco and right-hander Edward Mujica from Triple-A Buffalo.
The 42-year-old Hernandez, whose 326 saves are 11th on the career list, was designated for assignment. Cleveland has 10 days to trade him or place him on waivers.
He went 3-1 with 6.23 ERA in 28 games after signing a $3.5 million, one-year contract as a free agent in December. He was hit hard Tuesday night in one inning against Philadelphia, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks.

Did Hernandez just get old? His raw line doesn't look that bad, other than the walks.
Looks like the Jays' idea to sign submediocre veterans that every other team thinks are washed up, on the hope that they can rise to mediocrity one final time, did not work. (Ohka/Thomson/V-Zam) Now they're back where they were last year, relying on their own submediocre farm system products. (exception: Marcum who is showing promise)
BTW, Josh Towers's walks/strikeout stats are great this year. He and Halladay are both giving up more than a hit per inning while walking nobody.
Belatedly, Hernandez helps the Phillies.
The ten guys ahead of him all broke into MLB at a younger age than Hernandez did, so that's... a thing.
Destined for the Nats' rotation?
Hernandez's stats are similar to the ones he's had the last 10 or so seasons...except his ERA. He'd probably be more useful than Jose Mesa.
My understanding was that merger talks between Hernandez and Mesa a year or two ago went nowhere. They were going to be the K-Mart and Sears of relievers -- has-beens with shitty stuff left on their way out, but decent hardware (don't they have half a dozen Rolaids titles between them)?
Mesa has one (95), Hernandez has 0.
Thomson's tougher to figure, since there's an injury involved, but you have to figure that in a league where guys like Mark Redman and Brian Lawrence are considered viable rotation options, he'll get another chance somewhere down the line.
His HOF Monitor score is higher than that of Brian Giles, Scott Rolen or Jorge Posada, among others.
