AP: Rookie to replace injured Nolasco in Marlins rotation

Marlins right-hander Ricky Nolasco was placed on the disabled list Monday with elbow inflammation, and will be replaced in Florida’s rotation by Rick Vanden Hurk, a Holland native who has yet to pitch above Class-A.

The 21-year-old Vanden Hurk was called up from the minors to make his major league debut Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
...
Vanden Hurk was at Double-A Carolina, where he had yet to pitch this year. The right-hander is 5-12 with a 3.47 ERA in four minor league seasons, and spent last year with the Gulf Coast League Marlins and Class-A Jupiter.

“Our people think real highly of him,” Gonzalez said.

Vanden Hurk said his family plans to fly in from Holland to watch his big league debut, including his father, who taught him the game.

He’s only got to win 287 games to catch Bert Blyleven for the lead amongst pitchers born in Holland…

Vanden Who?

I actually drafted this kid in my NL only keeper league. Thought he might be the Marlins closer by the all star break. 'Cause hey, with Julio in charge, you just never know...

Actually, this kid caught my eye with his winter ball stats, and the fact that he can really bring it. I didn't think he'd be in the majors until next season tho. I bet the Fish wish they still had Petit instead of paying Julio $2.6m to act like a batting practice pitcher...

Since when is Nolasco injured?

Perhaps this is my out for the Nolasco/Maine bet with Heit.

Should've dealt Nolasco for Baldelli when the Marlins had the chance.

Per the beat writer for the Sun-Sentinel Nolasco's velocity had been down his last few spring outings. He's had an MRI, which did not reveal any damage. The club doesn't know what's wrong with him yet. They had to DL him to make room for a starter (Vanden Hurk).

Regarding the comment on Nolasco for Baldelli, have you seen this kid De Aza play? I'll take him and his minimum salary over Baldelli any time. I also like the way the Marlins' front office hordes their surplus of pitching.

Julio may still be a valuable part of this edition of the Marlins. He and the pitching coach spent hours looking at video after his Sunday outing. Don't be surprised if he makes adjustments to his delivery and begins to be successful.

When I read "Holland-born," I assumed Michigan. I suppose I'm provincial that way.

Speaking of: the actual name of the country (in English, at least) is the "Netherlands," but everyone refers to it colloquially as "Holland," and its natives are referred to as "Dutch." What's up with that? I can't think of a parallel in any other country.

Somehow I don't think the Rays ever offered Baldelli for Nolasco (I'd have trouble believing the Marlins wouldn't have taken that if offered).

This just screams, "Logan Kensing."

A-ball success or not, I expect a 10.00 ERA and developmental retardation.

The Netherlands has an old and storied history. Holland is the largest of the "states" which make up the Netherlands -- a federation of smaller states just like the United States. Many people refer to the entire entity as Holland because William of Orange (Elector of Holland and at the time subject of the Spanish crown) led the non-Catholic Netherlands in revolt and many people viewed the conflict as Spain vs. Holland. I believe they're called Dutch because they called themselves Deutsche much like the Germans still do.

The USA has some parallels we're the United States but people are Americans. If people referred to us collectively as Masschussets sometimes because they started the American Revolution we'd be in the same boat.....thankfully we're not.

Win Remmerswaal made a valiant effort. What a great name for a pitcher. Too bad the paper only said "Win, Remmerswaal" three times in his career.

I have not. But his minor league numbers don't look that impressive. I guess I'll reserve judgment until the Marlins play the Mets and after 100 PAs.

According to the baseball cube this guy was born in New York:

Maybe it's a mistake and it should be Amsterdam?

The guy has 25 professional innings under his belt. 9 hits and 41 K are nice. 14 BB are scary. Should be interesting, hopefully this game is on Extra Innings, maybe I'll take a look tonight.
