And on the subject of Hessman, what's the story on him? He's had a strange career progression as far as I can tell from The Baseball Cube. In 2002 at age 24, he made it to AAA in the Braves organization and hit .262/.321/.486 as a third baseman. Since he was blocked by some guy named Larry, he moved to 1B/OF and hit .248/.296/.440 in an injury-shortened year, but he hit well in a brief call-up with the Braves. In 2004, he hit .287/.365/.562 in Richmond but only .130/.155/.261 in 29 games in the majors.
He played Toledo the next year and hit .214/.313/.436 followed by .165/.269/.406 at the age of 28. Amazingly, Detroit re-signed him and he hit .254/.356/.540 last year and led the IL in HRs and RBIs, and is hitting .297/.388/.692 this year. Is there some strange background to all of it?
