AP: St. Louis Cardinals tie major league record with 10 straight hits

The St. Louis Cardinals tied a major league record with 10 straight hits, two each by pitcher Braden Looper and Aaron Miles, in a 10-run fifth inning that chased David Wells of the San Diego Padres on Monday night.
...
The Cardinals, who entered the inning trailing 3-0, hit six straight singles before Rolen’s seventh homer made it 7-3 and chased Wells. Ryan Ludwick homered on Mike Thompson’s first pitch.

Yadier Molina walked before Looper and Miles each singled for the second time. David Eckstein’s sacrifice fly, which made it 10-3, was the first out.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the walk does not constitute an interruption to the hit streak. The Cardinals are among several teams with 10 consecutive hits, also doing it in 1920 and 1922.

I'm sure this has always been the case, and I'm equally sure the record for most consecutive hits in a game is too insignificant to worry about, but to me 10 straight hits should mean 10 straight batters got hits. Throw a walk in there and, AFAIC, the streak is over.

But this way they went to 11! Sort of...

Enjoy it while it lasts, Cards fans. Next time Maroth takes the mound the record will be broken

David Wells is done!

Cooked.
Fried.

Put him on the 2012 HOF watch list.

I say he hits the DL within the next few days, and the Padres will go with Hensley.
If David Wells takes the mound later this week at Great American, there is clearly something wrong with Bud Black's "Managerial Style".

Dammit, you put the name of the opposing pitcher in there! We could have had a fun contest guessing who it was, at least those of us who didn't know who the Cardinals were playing today.

As soon as I heard that an NL pitcher gave up 10 straight hits the name that leaped to mind was "Ryan Vogelsong". But he hasn't pitched this year. Second guess, John VanBenschoten. First non-Pirates guess, Jason Jennings.

Maybe Wells can get all eight hitters to sign a baseball that has already been signed by all the other people who have been part of a 10-consecutive-hit streak.

On June 23, 1930 Brooklyn got 12 straight hits against the Pirates over the 6th and 7th innings. They got 10 straight to end the 6th and had a runner thrown out on the bases. The next two batters led off the 7th to make it 12.

There aren't all that many decent hitters on the Cardinals, but if I had to guess two guys to get two hits in an inning, they would certainly not be Aaron Miles and Braden Looper.

I think you meant to say Braden Looper and Aaron Miles.

Okay, so Aaron Miles is turning out to be the best pitcher AND the best hitter on this team. Can we just go back to using the phrase "Defending World Series Champions" for the team that won in 2005? Er, that is, never mind.

I was actually watching this game in the fifth, saw the first run score. Then flipped back to something else, and came back about 10-12 minutes later, and it was 10-3. A very "what the #### just happened" moment.

No wonder Tony's batting those pitchers eighth.

I wasn't watching the game, but turned it on as ESPN was cutting to a commercial. They were zooming in on the scoreboard as they left and all that was in the picture was

0 2 0
0 10 0

And I thought they were showing the RHE section of the board and that the story was that the Cards had 10 hits already but hadn't managed to score.

Maroth went to the DL today.

And there was much rejoicing.

I was at the game tonight. It was fairly ridiculous. Looper's second hit was on a bunt attempt that the pitcher failed to field properly. It was a stretch to call that a hit.

Maroth went to the DL today.

With what? A dislocated pitching ability?
   18. rembini06 Posted: August 06, 2007 at 11:59 PM (#2474824)
I believe the official reason was elbow tenditis, which is not to say I believe the official reason.

There's a precedent for this sort of thing.

STL Post-Dispatch
It was the third time the Cardinals had 10 consecutive hits in franchise history, but the first time for the franchise since 1922. The last major-league team to get 10 consecutive hits was Kansas City in 2004.
So when's the last time a non-Missouri team did it?

Maroth went to the DL today.

If I were Jocketty, here's the conversation I would have had with Maroth:

Jocketty: Mike, you're going on the DL.

Maroth: But I'm not hurt.

(A dozen burly men carrying tire irons and crowbars appear behind Jocketty.)

Jocketty: Yeah, that's gonna get fixed real quick.

I think with this year's Cardinals team it would be more like:

Jocketty: Don't worry about nothing, TLR. I have a feeling that Maroth is going to have a little accident that might keep him from starting tonight's game, heh heh heh.
Maroth: [enters, in great pain, leaning on Kip Wells] Kip, I'm afraid I won't be able to play tonight. My old gimpy rotator cuff has gone akimbo again.
[Jocketty runs in wearing a mask, bashes Maroth on the arm with a club, runs off]
Maroth: Kip, that precision assault popped it back into place! Thank you, masked stranger!
TLR: Awwww, he's going to ruin everything!

Well, my ideal resolution to the Maroth situation would have ended with the Cardinals wearing a "46" patch on their uniforms for the rest of the season. But I suppose the DL will have to do.

How would offing Ken Dayley help the 2007 Cards?

That was some generous official scoring.

"According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the walk does not constitute an interruption to the hit streak."

What about sac flies, sac hits, hit-by-pitch, and catcher's interference? I'm guessing only HBs keep the streak intact according to Elias, as the other three rack up an out or an error.. record or no record, great accomplishment, must be a fantastic vibe for a team when they fall into a groove like that.

So who has the REAL record, most consecutive batters reaching base by a hit? ; ) And how about most consecutive batters reaching base by a hit over two innings? Now THAT's an achievement I'd like to hear about.
