AP: Umpire hit by pitch, taken off field in ambulance

Plate umpire Kerwin Danley was taken off the field in an ambulance after he was struck on the jaw by Brad Penny’s fastball that Dodgers catcher Russell Martin missed in the fourth inning Saturday night.

The game was delayed for 18 minutes, with Danley laying nearly motionless behind home plate before being put on a stretcher and loaded into the ambulance.

Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said Danley lost consciousness briefly, but was conscious and coherent when he was placed into the ambulance.

Actually it was the jaw.

Hopefully he's all right.

oh dear.

Shouldn't the mask protect all parts of "the jaw"?

Guess not.

Yeah, it's been changed now. The initial AP report that I originally had linked said the throat, before AP did an update with newer information.

Watching live, it was horrifying.
The ball appeared to hit Danley in the side of the neck - and immediately you thought of Mike Coolbaugh.

I thought it hit the part of the mask that covers the point of the jaw, which probably still felt like a Mike Tyson punch.

with the fastball at 96 miles per hour, having a mask might have saved his life. i'm glad he's alright.
