AP: Yankees likely to add catcher after [Jose] Molina leaves with hamstring injury

New York Yankees catcher Jose Molina injured his hamstring Sunday night, forcing sore-armed Jorge Posada to take over and making the addition of another catcher likely.

After the Boston Red Sox’s 8-5 win Sunday night, Yankees manager said the team probably would add a catcher. They open a two-game series Monday night at Tampa Bay.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen with Molina now,” Girardi said. “He hurt his (left) hamstring. That’s why we took him out… It was pretty bad.”

Girardi said Molina was hurt in the fourth inning when he slid in safely on Johnny Damon’s sacrifice fly. He trotted slowly to first on a ground out in the sixth and a single in the eighth. Wilson Betemit pinch ran for him, and Posada, who has a sore right shoulder, moved from designated hitter to catcher in the ninth when Boston stole two bases without drawing a throw.

“It’s kind of hard,” Girardi said. “I was hoping they didn’t get anyone on where they could run. It didn’t work out that way.”

Crisp wasn't such a shocker, but Pedroia jogging into second without a throw was kind of embarrassing. Excited for "Clueless Joe" headlines later this morning.

I'm excited because the Yankees are staying close in games even without any offense.

No problem. Girardi just needs to activate himself.

NY Daily News:
The Yankees likely will be without Joba Chamberlain on Monday night in Tampa Bay, as the reliever left the team on Sunday night to tend to his ailing father.

According to sources, Harlan Chamberlain collapsed at his home in Lincoln, Neb. He was listed in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, a nursing supervisor there told the Daily News on Sunday night. Chamberlain learned the news after the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Chamberlain's sister called a Yankees official during the eighth inning in an attempt to reach Chamberlain, who was in the bullpen at the time.

After the game, a source said, Chamberlain returned the call, only to learn of his father's collapse.

Sources said Chamberlain broke down in tears inside the clubhouse, as manager Joe Girardi consoled him.

Sad news for Joba. Hope his old man recovers

Harlan Chamberlain has struggled with his health, with the left side of his body slowly deteriorating, according to a story in the Daily Nebraskan last November. The paper said Harlan can no longer hear efficiently out of his left ear.

Hey, Ayumi can't hear out of her left ear, she's still working on her new album!

Prayers for Joba and his Dad. I enjoy watching them interact.

I'm sure there is a few spare Molina's hanging around somewhere...

The Rays and Yankees might as well play the next two games from crutches and wheelchairs at this rate.

Joba's dad didn't look too good in the photo on the NYDN article.

Some real jackass comments on the bottom, too. I hate the Yankees just as much as any normal person, but reveling in the imminent death of some poor sick old man just because his son can throw a baseball really hard is a bit beyond the pale, IMO.

The added tragedy is that he's not that old; he's not even 60 yet.

Hang in there, Joba-Papa. (Joba, too.)

What's Doug Mirabelli doing?

More good than he would do on the roster.

I would think that Mike Piazza would be a better option than anyone already mentioned. I mean, wouldn't he? Or am I just being stupid?

Not for a week-long fill in
   18. Lassus Posted: April 14, 2008 at 02:30 PM (#2743653)
Good point. But, then you just keep Piazza and get rid of the excess Molina. I'm sure the Molina clan has some kind of procedure in place for this if the Yankees front office needs guidance.
   19. PreservedFish Posted: April 14, 2008 at 02:33 PM (#2743656)
The lack of press coverage of Piazza's apparent retirement is incredible. I know that he's going out with a whimper, but seriously ... this is a first ballot HOFer.
   20. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee Posted: April 14, 2008 at 02:52 PM (#2743671)
What is going on with Piazza anyway? Would he listen if pretty much any team called, or did he just have the quietest retirement ever for a HOFer?

Chad Moeller

Coming soon from Waldling...

Sterling..."Suzyn, the Yankees ALWAYS seem to come up with the BEST backup catcher around...and Chad Moeller is yet another one. Cashman has done it again!(horse-voices a line or two of "I've Got A Feelin' You're Foolin'" from 'Broadway Melody of 1936' purely for unclear emphasisity)

Suzyn..."Ummm"
   22. OCD SS Posted: April 14, 2008 at 03:18 PM (#2743696)
I still remember Sterling intoning how John Flaherty was the best back-up catcher in baseball. Is any backup on the Yankees automatically the BBUCIBB?

Chad Moeller, come on down! You're the next contestant on Ohmigawdihopewedonhavetoplaythisguy!

Whoever they pull out of their hats, the Yanks will likely have to play some given Posada's situation.

ocd -- this not only applies to their backup catchers, but pretty much any Yankee at any position.
