Aramis Ramirez expected to named winner of Hank Aaron Award

Or as Batting Mellish once ranted..."This award is a travesty. It’s a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham!”

The Cubs’ Aramis Ramirez is expected to be named winner of the National League Hank Aaron Award, presented by major league baseball for offensive statistics, prior to Game 4 of the World Series Sunday night.

Ramirez hit .289 with 27 homers and 111 RBI. He is a surprise winner, considering he did not even have the best offensive statistics in the National League at his position, third base. The Mets’ David Wright hit 33 homers and drove in 124 runs while hitting .302.

And Ramirez’s numbers pale in comparison to the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols, who hit .357 with 37 homers and 116 RBI.

But for the first time, fans voting at MLB.com picked the winner, which explains the reason Ramirez won.

...When the award was created nearly a decade ago, it was based on statistics, which explains why Barry Bonds won three times and Alex Rodriguez four.

lol. Fans are stupid. Sportswriters are stupid. Players are stupid. Coaches and managers are stupid (Gold Glove awards, anyone?).

They should let Hank Aaron make this decision himself...or not have awards at all.

As a Cub fan, this award totally makes up for getting swept out of the playoffs.

Aramis is a deserving winner of the Hank Aaron Award. He also has 3 A's in his name.

Did they provide an address for mailing Ramirez congratulations and racist death threats?

I remember reading somewhere, several years ago, that baseball was surprised that the Hank Aaron Award hadn't become the equivalent of the Cy Young Award for hitters (because the MVP Award was, after all, for the guy with the most value, not for the guy with the best offensive performance). I doubt that results like this will help to legitimize the award in anyone's eyes.

I can think of no better person to whom the Tommie Aaron Award should be given.

What? Oh. Yeah, Pujols, of course!

Just a reminder for all of those who rant about the BBWAA's votes for MVP and Cy Young: it could be worse.

Tommie Aaron Award
That would be a pretty funny award, kind of like that award for the last man drafted in the NFL. (Mr. Irrelevant, perhaps?)

So it would be the worst season by the brother of a star... Or candidate with the biggest differenc between his performance and his brother's performance.
MikeMaddux.v1989 would have won probably. Jose Molina (51 OPS+) to brother Bengie's 98 would make him a candidate for this year.
