Austin Kearns Reportedly Traded To Yankees

I assume Kearns for Dunn, now?  Wait… what year is it?

According to multiple reports, Cleveland Indians outfielder Austin Kearns has been traded to the New York Yankeess [sic]... In 2010, the 30-year-old Kearns has managed a .764 OPS and appears set to play his first full season since 2007. With the Yankees, he appears likely to serve as a fourth outfielder of sorts. He has played all three outfield positions this year alone, so he may prove valuable from the bench.

I see how the Yankees, despite another outstanding season, are making more moves to get a little better. As a Red Sox fan who feels like Boston is clawing back from injuries to stay within hailing range of the Yankees and Rays, it is frustrating to see NY making these moves, because I know there's not a lot else we can do except maybe hunt for more relief pitching.

Then I think to myself, if I feel a little helpless right now, what do Blue Jays and Orioles fans feel like every year?

The coverage this trade has gotten has been my first indication that Kearns has had a decent season so far. Shows how much attention I've been paying...

But was he meant to play for New York?

AK was the most disappointing new player of the 00s. I thought he had star written all over him.

Does this mean the Berkman deal is off? How can the Yankees need both of these guys?

Berkman replaces Juan Miranda. Kearns replaces Colin Curtis.

Good as the Yankees have been, their bench has stuck out like a sore thumb. Glad to see that they're doing something about it.

Love this deal.

And the Yanks record obscures the number of injuries they have sustained this year--not a crazy number or anything but still a steady loss. All of these guys in some ways replace Nick Johnson. Using your payroll to mitigate injury losses is one of the things big-spending teams should be doing.

Berkman DH's vs. RHP and occasionally spells Teixeira. Probably plays 4-5 days a week.

Kearns plays LF against most LHP, Gardner moves to CF, Granderson sits. Probably plays 2-3 days a week.

Also gives you decent PH for Cervelli/backup IF when Posada or ARod DH's or rests.

Edit:Using your payroll to mitigate injury losses is one of the things big-spending teams should be doing.

The Yankees aren't even taking much money. They're only paying ~$4M of the $9M Berkman is owed. Kearns is only making $750K. Anyone could take that.

If you want to talk about taking on payroll, look at the bankrupt Rangers' recent moves. Lee $9M, Guzman $8M. Cantu $6M.

The Yankees are a model of fiscal restraint.

re [1]: Look at it this way: I'll put Pedroia, Beckett, Varitek, Ellsbury up against Berkman/Kearns as deadline 'acquisitions'.
