Australian Grant Balfour stars for Tampa Bay Rays

THIS is the Australian face at the centre of the sporting fairytale that has taken Major League Baseball and American sports fans by storm.
...

“It was awesome to get the win and be mobbed by the players. I haven’t had players form a huddle around me like that since I represented Australia in the Intercontinental Cup in 1999.”

Dave Nilsson has company.

I am glad for Grant. And galled that Melvin gave him away.

It's great to see him performing so well and getting so much attention for it. He's a talented pitcher, and he's always great to the fans. Plus, he's from Australia, so he's fun to listen to.

I still think "Balfour" is a funny name for a baseball player, much like "Bob Walk" or "Prince Fielder".

As Joe Posnanski said, the only possible worst name for a pitcher than "Grant Balfour" would be "Allow Dinger" (or something like that)

What's his story, how's a guy with his stuff and minor league numbers take this long to do anything?

Homer King would be a good name for a hitter, not so good for a pitcher

5,
Inconsistency and injuries.

A friend of mine is a clubhouse guy and says Grant is best teammate you can have

I found it interesting how much his vocalizations dropped in his Game 4 outing. The huffing was still there, but he pretty much kept his mouth shut. So the Cabrera situation affected him, and he doesn't need the "intensity" of screaming after every pitch to be successful.

Harv, didn't Balfour go to Tampa for McClung?

I drafted him like 4 times over the years in Diamond Mind, only to have to cut him because of his injury problems. boo for me, yay for him. Now when is Luke Prokopec going to make something of himself?

I think Josh Outman should have the better career...

I'm sure Prokopec will prove to have the better career than Gagne.

Good to see him getting press in some of our backward thinking newspapers as well.

Hopefully a few more Aussies will tune in to the playoffs now

Hopefully a few more Aussies will tune in to the playoffs now

Are they on TV over there? Some sort of Aussie ESPN-4, like we used to get the AFL Grand Final over here?
