az central: Schlereth gives D-Backs scare

Get Rock Hoover on the case!

The Diamondbacks got a scare Friday night when their top draft pick, Arizona left-hander Daniel Schlereth, stopped warming up in the bullpen and then was seen icing his pitching elbow during a super-regional game in Miami.

But Schlereth told the Diamondbacks that he felt discomfort in his left side - not his arm - and stopped throwing for precautionary reasons, scouting director Tom Allison said.

“I just traded text messages with him,” Allison said Friday night. “It was just precautionary, and he’ll get it checked out, and we’ll find out everything (Saturday). Obviously, with what he’s gone through already, with the elbow and the oblique, he wants to be extra cautious.”

Schlereth, whom the Diamondbacks took with the 26th pick in the first round, had Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery during his senior year in high school and had an oblique injury last year.

You figure the Dbacks will ask him to take a full medical and focus on the rebuilt elbow before giving him a contract. Hopefully Schlereth's elbow is fine and this is just the oblique again. If it is something serious though, and the Dbacks sign him for far less than slot (a la Tim Stauffer), it'd be nice to get Daniel Webb under contract. As Nick points out, the coaching change might help the Dbacks. I doubt they can sign their other interesting high schoolers (Daniel Hultzen and Riccio Torrez) due to their strong college commitments, but you never know.

I was wondering why he didn't come in last night. That was a really good game, and I'm disappointed I haven't watched much college baseball before.

If Daniel is hurt, maybe the Dbacks can get his sister under contract at a discount as well.

#1,
Daniel Webb says the coaching change means he will not attend UK, even though they quickly promoted the pitching coach/recruiting coordinator to the top spot to try to keep their large, talented recruiting class on the way to Lexington.
Webb says he is considering following Coach Cohen to Miss St or he will go JUCO. I would guess nearby John A Logan (IL) CC, St Catharine's (KY) JUCO and the Florida and Tennessee JUCO powers would be likely landing places

This could have a big impact on Alex Meyer's decision to attend UK.

So if he fails the physical and the two sides are unable to come to an agreement, the DBacks will get another first round pick next year, right?

I guess that's some sort of consolation.

Hard to get too worked up over this guy one way or the other.
