Cool!

This is owning a pitcher.

Outstanding. I looked up Jim Brosnan.

No, this is.

This is owning a pitcher.

This is...uh...not.

You know how you can go to a player's gamelogs and highlight a span of games, then create totals for those games? It would be nice if you could do that for seasons as well, if you could find out what Billy Williams hit in the 1960s, or sum up Nolan Ryan's totals with the Astros.

Or can you do that, and I just haven't figured it out?

Peralta against Santana is...Corkie Miller vs. all pitchers...MLE

here's all players in baseball history with 250+ HR, 250+ Sb, 1500+ hits and .490+ SLG through age 32:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/3mNC

It took me about 5 variations using Beltran
s #s to run off all the non HOF caliber players (Dawson and Booby Bonds were pretty persistent in ruining the group)- if I could use more categories on PI it'd be easier...

and this one is all players with OBP above .375, HRs over 100, SBs over 80 and doubles over 150 by age 25...

Am I the only one who doesn't really get into PI? I think that I maybe wonder about something hat it can answer about once a month. For instance, a friend asked me when was the last time a pitcher had the GWRBI, but didn't get the win. This was after Felix Hernandez's grand slam. Unfortunately, no one records GWRBIs. I think that my question this month was about how many left-handed hitting shortstops there were. Maybe I'll look that up, but I'm not sure if it's worth subscribing to it for the level of use that I'm interested in. For the record, I do support bb-ref in other ways and have met Sean and Justin and enjoyed their company.

Then again, I'm not a typical stathead.

This one.

Not as impressive as the ones posted above, but I have to throw it out there anyway.

My team's in first at the All-Star break, I got an unexpected raise at work last month, Anne Hathaway and Sarah Silverman are back in circulation, everybody from MST3K is reuniting at a comics con later this month in San Diego... and PI is free this week.

Is this shaping up to be the coolest summer ever, or what?
   12. Monty Posted: July 14, 2008 at 08:45 PM (#2856433)
No, this is.

Those Intentional Walks toward the bottom? That's a sign of a pitcher giving up. And I think it's a good idea to give up in this case.

I'd like start a PI Challenge game: given two players, construct a PI query that returns just those two. The fewer criteria, the better. The more odd the pair of players, the better. Here's Babe Ruth and Ken Khelps.

I asked about that a while ago and was told they intended to have this feature available soon.
   15. Charter Member of the Jesus Melendez Fanclub Posted: July 14, 2008 at 10:02 PM (#2856499)
Sure, if soon = since PI has been available.

Billy Williams in the '60s: .295/.355/.494, 249 HR, 853 RBI, 861 R, 132 OPS+
Nolan Ryan for Houston: 106-94, 3.13, 1854.2 IP, 1866 K, 796 BB, 110 ERA+
   16. Shock Posted: July 14, 2008 at 10:06 PM (#2856502)
We're talking about being able to do it on the front page of a player. Just highlight the years and generate a little mini-report. Just like you can do on the gamelogs.

Obviously you can do it with PI or with Pinto's DB...

No, this is pwnage.
   18. Robert S. Posted: July 14, 2008 at 10:45 PM (#2856533)
This is owning a hitter.
   19. Watch Crispix Attacks geek out Posted: July 14, 2008 at 10:52 PM (#2856537)
The most surprising part is that the 0-for-17 includes only one strikeout.
   20. Robert S. Posted: July 14, 2008 at 11:16 PM (#2856557)
Webb throws strikes and Nomar thinks he gets paid by the swing.
   21. Shock Posted: July 14, 2008 at 11:41 PM (#2856588)
This ain't bad either.
   22. Sandlapper Spike Posted: July 14, 2008 at 11:58 PM (#2856622)
Here is another interesting owning-a-hitter situation.

   24. Boots Day Posted: July 15, 2008 at 12:13 AM (#2856644)
I got Ray Durham going 0-for-26 lifetime against Mariano Rivera. Is that the biggest 0-fer out there involving an active hitter and active pitcher?
   25. Devin McCullen has no value to Eastern Europe Posted: July 15, 2008 at 12:21 AM (#2856654)
This isn't actually an oddball duo, because they're in each other's top 10 comps. But I wanted to do it anyway, because they're both high on my Hall of Merit ballot - Bob Johnson and Reggie Smith. Although it is a whole-career match in this case.
   26. Brandon in MO (for America!) Posted: July 15, 2008 at 03:57 AM (#2856750)
Now this is just weird

In his brief major league career spanning 16 plate appearances, Pete Rose Jr. played in 3 of the 4 stadiums that his father played in as a home player (Riverfront, Veterans Stadium, and Stade Olympique). His only hits came off of Jason Schmidt and Kevin Appier.

In 10 PAs, Ozzie Guillen went 0 for 5 with 4 walks and a sac bunt against Livan and Orlando Hernandez.

And this is ownage by a pitcher.

Congrats to Gregg Olson for walking six batters in 1 1/3 innings and picking up a save. Including intentionally walking Barry Bonds to face Brent Mayne (now, THAT'S protection, take note Riggleman)

Honorable mention to Troy Percival for walking 4 in one inning while picking up a save.

Congrats to Woody Williams for picking up a win as a starter with a game score of 12

Congrats to Harvey Haddix for a 107 game score in a loss and congrats to Jim Maloney for a game score of 106, 18 strikeouts, and a loss (in another game, Maloney walked 10 in a 10 inning complete game shutout)

Ken Johnson got a game score of 92, a no-hitter, and a loss. While Kevin Appier got a game score of 91, a one-hitter, and a loss. ####### Palmeiro.

So, wonder how many people came into a game to pinch-hit, and stayed in to record a save

Extra congrats

to Roger Craig for moving his pitcher into RF so Randy Bockus could face Dale Murphy only to have it backfire in so many ways. (Bockus would come in to face Murphy again later in 1987, only to have it backfire again)

to Trent Durrington for helping prevent a Vizcaino v. Vizcaino duel and to Luis Vizcaino for being the best Vizcaino of all

to Wes Ferrell for topping 30 RBI as a pitcher twice, both in years that he never played the field)

And...

more pitcher ownage
