BA: Minor League All-Star Team

OF Jay Bruce • Reds
Bruce looks like a steal after being just the fourth high school outfielder drafted in 2005, behind Justin Upton, Cameron Maybin and Andrew McCutchen. The 19-year-old Dayton Dragon led the Midwest League with 42 doubles and 63 extra-base hits.

I understand the choice of Bruce here, but Bruce played in a good environment for power hitting in Dayton, and Cameron Maybin played in a much tougher environment in West Michigan, performed nearly as well, and didn’t even make the second team. Fernando Martinez probably would have been here had he stayed healthy all season and played in more than 45 games in Hagerstown.

BA’s All-Star teams for all levels are also on the site.

Who's your favorite of the young OF studs, Mike (Upton, Maybin, Bruce, McCutchen, Martinez, Tabata)?

Right now I think I may pick Maybin over any other prospect in baseball save Gordon.

Obviously, I'm not Mike, but I rank them...ok...I tried, but I couldn't come to a conclusion. I think they're pretty much interchangeable at this point. Every single one of them has a lot going for them.

Before the '05 draft, it was heavily rumored the Brewers would take Maybin. I feel like giving Ryan Braun a Saving Private Ryan-style "earn it" lecture. Maybin did strike out a lot (116 in 385 ABs)...

Nah; I'd rather continue to hate Washington, as I have since that draft day, for taking Zimmerman one pick ahead of the Brewers...

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go try to lower my blood pressure after typing that sentence, and mentioning that horrible act committed by Jim Bowden and friends....

It's funny to think that if the Brewers had drafted Zimmerman, he might be starting next year in Nashville.

Right now I like Maybin the best, but it is way too early to tell. Martinez and Tabata probably have the most upside, but neither has played a full, healthy season yet.
