Baggarly: Giants advise Randy Winn to seek employment elsewhere

It’s a jungle out there
We could be wrong now, but we don’t think so!

While his production tailed off, nobody could dispute that Winn was a good Giant. He played hurt without complaint and got himself ready to be on the field every day. He gave a consistent effort. He’s a smart defensive player and baserunner. Those are the kinds of things managers appreciate most in players. From a beat writer’s perspective, he was accessible and his dry sense of humor made him an asset in the clubhouse. He was our Good Guy award this past season after finishing high in the balloting in previous years.

As Landis said to me today, “If anyone tells me they don’t like Randy Winn, that makes me wonder about who I’m talking to.”

Winn owns an unfortunate distinction among current major league players: He has played in more regular-season games than anyone without a postseason appearance. I think he realized the Giants were building toward a contender and hoped to see the process through.

Winn: Seems like a nice enough guy, and I wish him well, but the Giants are wise to let him move on. Giants weren't so wise to be fooled by his '05 hot stretch.

I feel like I just read this column about Pedro Feliz. Without the "building towards a contender: part.

He'll thank them later.

Who runs the Giants now? Their old GM, Brian Sabean, would be all over a 35 year old corner OF with a .670 OPS and diminishing skills.

Winn needs to be able to hold down CF to have real value.Good hitter but below average stats for a corner.

Sucks to lose your job in times like these. I hope he does alright in the job market, he just had a kid too.

If you believe the fielding metrics, Winn's been a bargain for the Giants.
