Baker: Mariners’ Morrow will be a reliever

To Morrow! To Morrow! Clear away the cobwebs.

But then, as it often happens, a new life happened while Morrow was making other plans. And Sunday, Morrow announced that the bullpen really is where he wants the remainder of his baseball life to unfold.

“Once they traded J.J. [Putz], I thought, I kept going back and forth and back and forth,” he said, adding that he told the Mariners of his decision roughly a week ago. “I just felt like a big relief when I went back to the bullpen, because I feel that’s like my home now. I’ve been there two years and I don’t know if I could go back [to starting].”

And he has no plans to try. Morrow met with Mariners coaches and front-office members early Sunday; they are on-board with the decision and released relief pitcher Tyler Walker a few hours later.

Walker had been one of several candidates vying for the closer’s job. Morrow won’t automatically be handed the role — whether he even starts the year in the majors will depend on how he looks in his final few bullpen outings here — but he’s clearly going to be closing in the not-too-distant future.

Bavasi continues to haunt the M's. He's the one who got this reliever thing in his head.

Should have listened to Tim Lincecum's dad, Mariners!

OH THIS IS JUST BLOODY FANTASTIC.

The thing not mentioned in the quote here is that there was the concern that Morrow's diabetes would limit his stamina. On one hand, if that's the reason, it's real tough to argue with -- if he can't start, he can't start. On the other hand, it seems like other athletes have been able to overcome the condition. Utimately, it's hard to second-guess someone about their own health.

Oh, also the M's sent down Jeff Clement.

You know, just because Morrow says he wants to close doesn't mean the team just has to go along. You don't let the players set the roster or determine their roles.

who is the better pitcher. Morrow or Josh Fields?

A somewhat uninformed concern, if so, unless he's somehow unhealthy on top of that. There's a good list of pro athletes with diabetes, SP Jason Johnson among them.

That being said, what an odd decision, at least on the surface.

What, seriously? He hasn't already proven himself enough over the last two years to be certain of a spot in the majors?

This is what happens when teams believe closers are essential for winning ball games. I can see why Morrow would rather close than start, though. It's a much easier job than starting, and you can make some pretty good coin for a very long time as a closer.

I have this image of the Mariners clubhouse 2 hours before Opening Day with guys telling each other where they want to play.

"I got second!"

"I call center!"

"Aww, I wanted center"

As a Yankee fan who saw Morrow take a no-hitter against them into the 8th inning last year, I think this is a terrific idea.

he and Dimitri Young are the only two I can think of. Who else?

EDIT: and Jay Cutler, right?

Gosh, I hadn't thought about calling your position for a long, long time. Thanks, HW.

Josh Fields is likely to be ready at some point in 2010 at the latest and seems to be reliever-only. The Mariners are not going to win anything of significance no matter how good their closer is. However, Morrow has some chance of being an impact starter. I don't get it. The diabetes is a red herring. Jay Cutler has it and plays a far more physically demanding position, albeit once a week. But a starter wouldn't be taxed much more than that. And no one gets to hit him, either.

Who else?

If we're not just going for active players, Ron Santo.

Athletes with Diabetes

I'd say if you can do an Ironman with diabetes, you can probably pitch six innings.

Sounds like someone hasn't been paying attention to the Mariners lately.

I rescind my prediction the Mariners will be surprise contenders in the AL West.

Athletes with Diabetes

Guy called Wasim Akram who is considered the one fo the best fast bowlers ( a power pitcher in other words! ) had one of the more serious types of diabetes.
