Baltimore Sun/Schmuck: Too fast, too soon for Guthrie

It wasn’t that long ago that Orioles fans—and the media—viewed right-hander Jeremy Guthrie as the steal of the century, which wasn’t hard to do since the century was only a few years old anyway.

The Orioles claimed him off waivers in 2007 from the Cleveland Indians, who drafted him in the first round 4 1/2 years earlier, signed him to a major league contract and simply ran out of room for him on their roster.

Guthrie quickly established himself in the starting rotation and made the Orioles front office look good for a change and—faster than you could say “Let’s not get carried away”—he was anointed the club’s No. 1 starter by default.

Too fast.

Too soon.

Two Opening Day starts later, Guthrie is wearing the mantle of staff ace uncomfortably. He has struggled with both his command and his confidence on the way to a 4-7 record and a 5.42 ERA through 14 starts. Maybe he’ll turn his season around against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, but it seems fairly obvious that he would be better off without the added responsibility of leading the Orioles young pitching staff.

Too soon? Guthrie was already 28.

And, y'know, #1 starter isn't an actual position. What responsibility comes with his position?

And poor Rich Hill -- 23 BB in 33 IP.

Gotta come up with a storyline, I guess. Of course, "slightly better peripherals this year, but much worse luck" is also a storyline . . .

Let me see if I have this straight. The newspaper guys like to write stories about who might be the ace. They decide that is the guy with the best record. Then if the manager starts him opening day, it is a certainty. If he doesn't win most of his games, the press debate whether he really is the ace and if that puts too much pressure on him.

Once the press decides he is no longer the ace, then another story results explaining who really is the ace (see best record on staff). If no one has a good record (see Orioles history), then the story is that there is no ace and the Orioles need to sign Pedro Martinez or go for an ace in the next free agent sweepstakes.

I can't wait for the story about who the clubhouse leader is since the Orioles released Kevin Millar and how the other players are too quiet after a loss.

As the other posters point out, there isn't a 'captain' of the starting staff. Sheesh.

Amen. One of the main talk-radio talking points against the Mets is that they lack a "true No. 2 starter." I don't understand what that means at all. They lack starting pitching, for sure, but I'd prefer my team just have five really good starters.

Higher air pressure increases resistance on the ball in flight, causing batted balls to not carry as well. With a home run rate of 1.8 per nine innings, "it seems fairly obvious" that Guthrie needs more pressure when he pitches.
