Baseball America: Top 10 Prospects: Kansas City Royals

Tipping the clinkscales in K.C…

That hope is tied to a restructured player-development system and draft philosophy modeled after one of baseball’s most successful franchises, the Braves. It’s no coincidence, seeing as general manager Dayton Moore and farm director J.J. Picollo worked for Atlanta before coming to Kansas City. Senior advisor Art Stewart, who has been with the franchise since its inception, said the team’s renewed efforts to build from within under Moore reminded him of the Royals’ early days, when they swiftly assembled a contender through shrewd trades and homegrown talent.

“The most important thing we have done is staff our front office and development departments with good people and a full staff,” said Moore, who noted that when scouting director Deric Ladnier arrived (also from the Braves) in 2000, he had just two crosscheckers on his staff. “Certainly, scouting and player development are the most important things we can do, and it doesn’t matter if it is in a small or large market.”

It will be interesting to see where Moustakas ends up. I think he is destined for the outfield, but I think Dayton Moore is intent on keeping him at shortstop as much as possible. Certainly his value is much higher there.

Its good to see the Royals adding pitching depth, but it has come at the total expense of finding any hitters. Now that Butler and Gordon are at the big league level, there are absolutely no legit power hitters in the system other than Moustakas, who has yet to play a full season. As Dayton has said, pitching is the commodity of baseball, and decent hitters aren't all that hard to find via trade or free agency, but still we're going to have to be able to produce some hitters.

I will also assume that the Royals #3 overall pick immediately skyrockets up to the #1 slot on this list. I think whoever they end up with will likely be a better prospect than Moustakas, much as I like Moose.

Moustakas has the physique and throwing arm to be an excellent catcher. I don't think they'll want to take that kind of chance with him, but if I was running PD over there, I'd at least give it a shot in instructs.

Was Moustakas the consensus "bad top draft pick," or was that Moskos?

Moskos. When you think bad top draft pick, think Pittsburgh Pirates...

Keith, if you had to re-rank the 2007 draft, what changes would you make in the top 5?

Shibal - from the mini-chat I did on Friday:

Are you saying money is not a question? I'd probably go Wieters, Price, Vitters, Porcello, Heyward, Parker, Dominguez, Main, Detwiler ... let's say Alderson 10th, he's rising in my eyes.

This isn't to say I don't like Moustakas; I just didn't consider him a top-five guy at the time of the draft, and I don't see why I'd change my mind just yet.

I like Keith's list. It means I snagged three of the top eight guys in the draft for my keeper team. (Wieters, Heyward, and Main) So, I'm pimping for him to be the best talent scout ever.

If Alex Gordon has a nice year, why not trade him...but demand fair value. Something in the way of a young player that is also blocked on another team (like Garza for Young). I'm NOT saying I know what that deal will look like right now.
