Baseball legend Bob Feller, Van Meter native, treated for anemia in Cleveland

Take that, Strasburg. This ain’t no tender flexor bullspit!

Iowa baseball hall of fame pitcher Bob Feller has been treated and released at a Cleveland hospital.

A spokesperson for the Bob Feller Museum in his native Van Meter told WHO-TV that Feller was battling anemia, a condition that develops when blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells that deliver oxygen to the body.

Feller, 91, is in good spirits, WHO reported. More details were not immediately available.

Oh, God, he's dying.

Yup, for about two seconds I thought the World Health Organization was directly involved in the care of Bob Feller.

Anemia?!? Why back in the day you ate well, you went about your business and your humors took care of themselves. All these nancy boy notions of blood and doctors and leaches are for the fancy pants types who can't stay strong. Bah!

He's outlived Moon and Entwistle, just Daltrey and Townshend left to go.

I love Feller- He says what he thinks, is honest and does not care what you/I think. He may be wrong, but you know where he stands, and I dont think he takes it personally if you disagree. In modern society, there seems to be little give and take or discussion. Instead it seems that there is yelling and screaming then demonizing those who would disagree wi us.

Dirty barroom bet question: Who's the oldest living Hall of Famer?

Hint: He homered in his first time at bat in the Majors.

Not a Hall of Famer.

Not a Hall of Famer.

And he's also not the right answer.

Doerr's indeed a Hall of Famer, and he's older than Feller, but he's not the oldest. Think about that hint I gave you.

How did this happen? Was the iron in Feller's blood displaced by excess quantities of awesome?

I don't know the answer to Andy's question, but in a half-hearted attempt to find out, I came up with another:

Among players who homered in their first MLB at bat, who has the highest career HR total?

Dunno, but I'll bet that your guy has at least 100x as many career dingers as my guy.

Isn't Lee McPhail older than Doerr? He is in the HoF and still alive, although of course he was never a player, but went in as an executive.
   22. Jolly Old St. Neck Wound, Moral Idiot Posted: August 22, 2010 at 03:40 PM (#3622722)
McPhail's indeed a few months older than Doerr, but not as old as my guy. And McPhail obviously didn't hit a homer in his first time at bat in the Majors.

I thought that's who it might be, but I didn't look up his details.

Andy's right, of course--the career record holder has far more than 100x the total of his guy.

Ace Parker, class of '72. The fact that it's a dirty question, though, opens up the possibility that he isn't the right answer; a few months back, Basketball Hall of Famer John Wooden would have been an older living Hall of Famer. And there are several dozen Halls of Fame in this country.

I may be missing something (as that happens more often than I care to admit) but the answer JOSNW,MTG is looking for is approximately four years younger than Feller.

DB

OH! I DID MISS SOMETHING!

Good one, JOSNW,MTG!!

Well, Ace is the answer, and until anyone can come up with a better one, I'm sticking to it. But you can see why I said "Dirty." (smile)

Assuming it's who I think it is (I may be wrong), I have a solitaire Strat-O-Matic draft league that includes players from all eras, from MLB, the Negro Leagues, Japan, and the AAGBL. I pretty much have every significant player in baseball history in it, except for those whom I've left out for moral reasons - the Black Sox, Ben Chapman, Marty Bergen, etc. Jeff Heath, who was a hell of a player, isn't in my league for what he did after that home run...

Or the "name the 15 (or whatever) future Hall of Famers present at Don Larsen's perfect game" question, whose solution includes Stengel, Alston, Allen and Scully.

Early Wynn would make four Baseball HOFers.

One of the sweetest games I ever heard was this one, which forced Early Wynn to go through an entire new Spring training and several more months just to get his 300th win.

Holy crap! Thanksgiving 2001 family dinner at my house was a microcosm of modern society.

Also, I wouldn't think Feller could be anemic - doesn't he eat iron bars for breakfast like all tough guys?

Or, "How many former Cardinals are honored in Yankee Stadium's Memorial Park?" Answer: Miller Huggins, Roger Maris, and Paul VI and John Paul II.
