Baseball Picture of the Day: Afghan Little League

102 days until Pitchers and Catchers.

“Soldiers from Camp Harriman and Afghan little league athletes are participating in a Friday morning baseball game on August 16, 2002. The first ever Afghan little league consisting of two teams the Eagles (“Sahein” in Arabic) and The Afghan Club, play baseball every Friday. Each team has a roster of 15 kids coached by soldiers from Camp Harriman. This league started with one ball and one glove sent to Jay Smith from the 96th Civil Affairs battalion forward deployed to Camp Harriman, Orgun Afghanistan. Local boys joined the men in playing catch and batting. Within weeks, dozens of Afghan boys had taken up the sport and were mastering the rules to form the little league teams. In support of Operation Enduring Freedom. (U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate 2nd Class (SW/DV) Eric Lippmann) (Released)”

I picked this picture because A) It's Veterans' day week and B) It's literally the polar (no pun intended) opposite of yesterday's "Baseball on Ice" pic.

That's pretty cool.

Is that an aluminum bat? Somebody's going to get sued!

Seriously, this is a beautiful picture, gamingboy. Do they have enough gear? Is there something I can do to help?

The batter has Matty Alou down cold.

Colonel Blake: Football game?

Gen. Hammond: Yeah, yeah, we put up a few bets, five thousand maybe, and have a little fun. Special services in Tokyo says it's one of the best gimmicks we've got to keep the American way of life going here in Asia.

Colonel Blake: Betting?

Gen. Hammond: No, football.

I can't believe in this picture until they start testing for steroids. I am disillusioned.

Afghanistan is short on rubber and long on burlap sacks and dirt.

Didn't the Khalifa Kerfuffles win this one?

Reminds me of my Out of the Park league where I've got 24 national teams in places like Botswana, China, Vietnam, and Honduras. Guess I'll have to add Afghanistan.

A charming photo from a place where the Taliban, not the Yankees or Red Sox, are "evil empires."

My impression is that Afghanistan has more evil empires than you can shake a stick at.

This is a old pic, from 2002. I have no idea what has happened since, but I seem to remember a few months back that there was some sort of drive in a big Military Town of trying to get sports equipment over there (since things have taken a turn for the worst since 2002). Might be worth a look in Google's news archives. Oh, and you can see a larger version of the image by hitting the top link.

Tomorrow will likely also have a bit of a Military theme, leading up to Veterans Day.

The Blue Jays also cannot make the playoffs in Afghanistan.

My brother is an officer in the Army and in late 2007 he was stationed in Iraq and mentioned in an email to me that he really wished they had some equipment to play a game of baseball. So I went on Craigslist and made a post asking if anyone had any old equipment they'd like to donate to soldiers in Iraq. I only got one response, from Dane Sardinha (I should mention I live in Kailua, HI). He donated a bag full of game used bats (maybe 10 or so, with his and his brothers' names and team names printed on them) a couple boxes of new balls, a full set of brand new Cincinnati Red catcher's gear used only once (in a major league game) another set of old catcher's gear, 3 bases, half a dozen gloves, plus a bunch of softball bats and balls and a bunch of signed baseball cards and stuff. It was amazing. I sent it all to my brother and he and his troops were tremendously grateful.
