Baseball Writers’ Association of America: PINIELLA WINS 3RD MANAGER AWARD, 1ST IN NL

Lou Piniella, who led the Chicago Cubs to their second consecutive National League Central title and the best record in the league, was named NL Manager of the Year in balloting by the BBWAA. It was the third Manager of the Year Award for Piniella, who won twice in the American League with the Seattle Mariners in 1995 and 2001.

Piniella, 65, was listed first on 15 of 32 ballots cast by two writers in each league city, second on eight and third on four to score 103 points, based on the 5-3-1 tabulation system. Charlie Manuel of the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies finished second for the second year in a row with 67 points, based on eight first-place votes, six seconds and nine thirds.

The Florida Marlins’ Fredi Gonzalez received five first-place votes and finished third overall with 48 points. The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Joe Torre, a two-time winner in the AL with the New York Yankees, got three first-place votes and ranked fourth with 45 points. The other first-place vote went to the St. Louis Cardinals’ Tony La Russa. In all, eight managers gained mention but none on every ballot.

That is the ugliest website of all-time.

Tony LaRussa got robbed. Piniella did a great job for 155 games or so, but I do hold him at least partially responsible for how the season ended.

Edited to add: if you look at votes on a per-game basis, Sveum might win!

No matter what, you have to admit that Piniella overcame the absence of the lack of Kosuke Fukudome to get the team to the playoffs.

Man, the BBWAA doesn't want anybody to look too closely at their work, I guess.

For some reason my brain will not register that Piniella didn't win this award in 1990. No knock on Leyland, but Piniella's team, other than the bullpen, seems on paper to be a lot less impressive. I guess it hurt him that he won the seemingly weaker division.

I would like to have seen Cecil Cooper get more votes. The team exceeded expectations and improved as the year went along. I really don't understand why TLR received more votes than Cooper did.

Yep....because it really didn't matter how many games the Phillies won. 62-100 would've gotten it done this year in the NL East, thanks to the Mets ineptness.

I'm just thankful that the Mets morphed into the other team throughout the playoffs so the Phils could beat them as well.

You can call Charlie a moron all you want. But to say the success of the Phillies is just because the Mets collapsed again really isn't quite on target.

I can't believe everyone left Lincecum off their ballot! Sure Piniella won 97 games but what is this, 1964? Don't writers know to look at more advanced stats? What was Piniella's VORP compared to Timmy's?

I think the take away from this award is that this cements Lou's future in the Hall of Fame, if he wasn't headed there already.

Because the Cardinals exceeded expectations to a greater degree than the Astros did.
