Biz of Baseball: The Empire Strikes (Again). Star Wars Ads Invade MLB.com

This is weirder than Michael Kay trying to explain Coolstandings.com to Al Leiter tonight!

A few short months ago, the baseball community was abuzz regarding the integrated advertisement for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull within MLB.com’s schedule of games.

Now, get ready for Darth Vader.

MLBAM has rolled out the next integrated advertisement campaign on MLB.com for LucasArts Entertainment’s new video game “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.”

Like the Indiana Jones ad campaign, Darth Vader will be featured on all 30 clubs’ schedule on MLB.com.

But, unlike the Indiana Jones campaign, the LucasArts Entertainment deal will see a special landing page showing current stats leaders around the league under the tagline, “Who’s Unleashing the Force?” as well as banner ads linking to the Star Wars: The Forced Unleashed” home page.

Man, remember when Star Wars was never embarrassing?

It's the classiest "Darth Vader in a baseball-related calendar" I've ever seen.

I missed that, but will someone tell me why he's been claiming for more than a year now that Carlos Pena was a free agent last off-season. NO ONE at YES can correct him?

Classy.

When Darth Vader appears on the Boston schedule, some Red Sox fans may go into apoplexy...especially those who've bought the Larry Lucchino pablum that the "evil empire" are the other guys.

Actually, the BoSox schedule features Han Solo. SUCKERS.

I missed that

Para-phasing out here...

Kay..."There is a site out there that says the Rays have a 96% chance of getting into the playoffs this season. I would give out the name of the site but I forgot it and I don't want to give out the wrong information (WHY START NOW, KAY?)."

Singleton..."The game is played on the field NOT on a piece of paper"

Leiter..."WOW, 96%! Michael, you really should give out the name of that site"

Kay..."Somebody told me about the site and I wrote it down...but someone crumbled up the piece of paper and threw it out. But they ran the results over a million times and kept coming up with the Rays getting in."

Leiter..."WOW! A million times! That's a lot there, Michael! That's some data base they have there, Michael. Must be a Fantasy League or something."

I then consumed a massiuvo ammount of barbs and snoozled off.

I thought the Darth Vader on the schedule just meant that George would be in the owners box.

There's only about a 1.5% chance of it happening, but because Leiter has a bit of a loose hinge in his free-speaking mechanism, I would have loved if he had said - before he thought about it - "Well, the game's not played up in the booth, either."

The Evil Empire is still the Yankees. The Red Sox are closer to Klingons (crossing Sci-Fi universe borders here, but you get the gist).

Seeing Vader on "Deal Or No Deal" was bad enough. Evil incarnate shouldn't be slumming like this.

If the Red Sox are Klingons, the Yankees are Romulans.

No, Yankees are the Borg. They assimilate and take the personality out of anything they absorb.
   14. Lassus Posted: September 05, 2008 at 02:18 PM (#2930107)
You're probably right, I kind of missed the boat on that one. It's just that the Borg is used for so much I didn't want to take that route.

It's a trap!

I like Star Wars logos on the schedule. Imagine if MLB figures out that the average fan has a daughter or girlfriend who is in the Britney demographic and puts her mug on the Opening Day square.
