Blog: Rays fans in New York

And dig the pre-mugged family pic! (if you look really, really close…you can see Jocko the Loon still handing out fliers in front of the kiddie Fascination kiddie Arcade!)

On Monday we tried to engage the locals by wearing Rays’ stuff around town, and it went largely unnoticed. It seems to me that the Rays, with the best record in all of baseball and certainly having a much better year than the Yanks, are still not seen as a legitimate competitor by the Yankee faithful. They assume that when the leaves in Central Park start to turn color, that it will be the Yanks and the Red Sox battling for the right to represent the American League in the World Series. Maybe so. Or maybe parking at the Trop in October will become a little more difficult.

See you at the ballgame. We’ll be wearing the Rays’ gear!!

I've seen that family on the 6 train, lurching back and forth with every curve, guidebooks sticking out of their back pockets, trying to make sense of the subway map, and blocking the subway doors.

The irony is that Tampa was solidly Yankees territory until recently. Very recently...

It's Yankees territory only when the Yankees are doing well, and by doing well I mean winning at that exact point of the season. Earlier this year they were in town while they were below .500 and the Yankee fan presence at the Trop was a fraction of what it normally is. Most of the Yankee and Red Sox "fans" that go to the games are pure front-runners.

Takes more than baseball gear to make a man
Takes more than Reds and Adam Dunn
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
