Bloomberg: Mets Owner Wilpon Says He `Screwed Up’ How Randolph Was Fired

“The secret phrase that offers a fired employee to leave with a sense of dignity.” That bottle of Chateau d’Yquem, the Emperor’s Club V.I.P. card and that old Mardie Cornejo uni you’ve had your eye on...are all yours, dude!

General Manager Omar Minaya should have waited until the morning after the Mets beat the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, California, on June 16 to dismiss Randolph instead of making it public at 3:18 a.m. New York time.

``I know I screwed up,’’ Wilpon told reporters at SportsNet New York’s Manhattan studios. ``I should have said, `wait a second.’’’

...Wilpon said he regrets not speaking up when Minaya told him the next day that he was going to fly to California and tell Randolph in person after the game. Because of the three-hour time difference, the announcement of Randolph’s firing was left out of New York newspapers.

``I wasn’t smart enough to say, `you are going to cut the New York press out?’’’ Wilpon said. ``I didn’t even think of it.’’

...Wilpon has been an owner of the Mets since 1980 when he purchased a controlling interest in the Major League Baseball franchise with Nelson Doubleday for $21 million in 1980. He bought out Doubleday in 2002 and became the sole owner of the team. Wilpon said he intends for his family to retain control of the Mets.

``Everything has a price, but not the Mets,’’ Wilpon said. ``I’m never going to sell, my family is going to have this asset.’’

Until I die and then my family will kick my corpse out of my coffin and use it as an auction block.

A month later. Brilliant.

Dig this subtle way of throwing Omar under the bus. You see, it's Omar's fault for being classless. Wilpon merely failed to call him on it.

It is especially brilliant now that the Mets are winning, all is forgiven. Bush should come out to explain his early mistakes in the war (burning through 3 weak generals, chasing Rumsfelds plan of less is more for two years too long) now that we are dominating in Iraq.

In both cases, the right decision was made, firing Randolph and neutralizing Iraq/Saddam. Neither were done perfectly, that can be forgiven. Both decisions will stand the test of time and the scrutiny of history.

Wow a perfect storm. A mets thread, a Bush thread, and an Iraq thread. The only way this could get topped is if they placed a Billy Beane-Mets trade rumor inside the article.

Did you know that Pete Rose hung out in gyms? Where they might have been selling 'roids? Where's a good place to buy dog food?

Where's a good place to buy dog food?

Are you looking for price or selection?

Wait until after the elections. It'll heat up again.

Not sure what this means. Do you mean when Obama wins and pulls our troops out of Iraq and Al Qaeda and Iran run roughshod over our Iraqi allies?

Which Iraqi allies are those? Certainly not the Maliki government, which is more closely allied with Iran than it is with the U.S., and wants our troops out.

If McCain wins, the violence will heat up pretty quickly. If Obama wins and doesn't withdraw the troops like he has promised, the violence will heat up. The Iraqis know it's an election year. They got CNN.

I agree that Wilpon screwed up. Randolph had no business managing a single game in 2008.

There's basically nothing that Randolph did better than Manuel is doing. That's a low bar, but I mean nothing.

#12, I'll give you tactics managers choose to do or don't do. But a lot of what a manager does is get his players to focus on work. This usually leads to better results. Managing in baseball is not 100% in-game management. Not even close.

Great timing by Wilpon! Just when everyone's forgotten about Willie and how the Mets screwed-up up the situation, Wilpon comes out with this crap and throws Omar under the bus. Way to bring up a dead story!

Way to bring in a completely off topic rant to derail the topic. No one could forgive Bush for forcing his biggest mistake on the country with the power he got because he failed to protect it in the first place.

As for the Randolf thing, I never thought it was that big of a deal, the guy flys a private jet across country, big deal. I do like that this article points out what we have all thought for a while now, Omar wanted to let Willie go at the end of the home stand and Wilpon stopped it.

So then the Mets will still be playing baseball in October? And November? And December? And...

I don't disagree at all. The players appear to be playing harder under Manuel. He seems better tactically. He even gives a better press conference.

On a sad note, Pedro's father passed away today. RIP, Papa Martinez.

The Mets are going to need another starter on Saturday. Vargas pitched today so he's not really available. Armas is on the DL.

Niese was supposed to pitch today but the game got rained out. I think he's the best option.

I heard Pete Rose used to hide the 'roids in hollowed out maple bats that he got from Jim Rice. One of those bats accidentally got into the hands of Barry Bonds. When he discovered what was inside those bats, well, the rest is history.
